Nomads slows tie down Ramblers but batsmen fail the challenge

Nomads had played Sydenhurst Ramblers for several years at the delightful Brook Cricket Club Ground but due to an alleged 'incident' concerning car parking between cricketers and the nursery school who hired the Pavilion a new venue was sought. Sydenhurst Ramblers secured Charterhouse School 1st XI ground and what a magnificent setting this is.

Nomads, once into the spacious changing rooms of the Peter May Pavilion discovered they were two short. One we already knew about. Joe Ireland has switched sides but replaced himself with a 19 year old Indian professional cricketer from the North Lancs League. Unfortunately the bus bringing young Rudveg to Victoria Coach Station was one hour late. So Joe sent both sides the message that he and Rugved Insulkar would be one hour late. The other late comer was Rohan Ghosh normally the most reliable of members. A domestic incident had resulted in a late start from Hammersmith for Rohan. Now Rohan is one of that rare breed of wonderful wandering cricketers-he opens the batting, opens the bowling and is a good wicket keeper.! On this day he was due to 'keep. In his absence Nomads prevailed upon Hugo Morris to stand in. He missed a few chances but also took a very good catch however his focus was on the arrival of Rohan and his relinquishing of the gloves. So when Joe arrived and Rugved joined us in the field Hugo rushed up to him and pressed the gloves upon him. In the slips noticing that this was not Rohan we asked if Rugved had kept wicket before. "Once, about five years ago" was his reply." I am a batsman/bowler sir" .We explained that Rohan was on his way and would take over soon. In the meantime Rudveg revealed himself to be no mean wicket keeper and made a neat stumping before Rohan finally arrived, delayed further by a hold up on the A3(M) due to a crash .

Nomads opened with two 'slows', skipper Andrew Smith and Marcus Budgen, and these two frustrated the Ramblers openers who thus made a very slow start. Andy Smith's figures were particulalry miserly, 6 runs off 6 overs. The introduction of veteran Chris Page and Stan Woolliscroft however brought some wickets. Indeed these purveyors of guile and flight provoked a tumble of wickets. But for the swashbuckling number three, Wren, who made good use of the shorter boundary Ramblers innings would have been truly bogged down and this against a Nomads side fielding nine for most of the innings.

Most unfortunately skipper Andy Smith in attempting what would have a champagne moment catch damaged a hamstring and had to hobble off and spend the rest of the day with an ice pack pressed against his injured hamstring so Charles Peerless took over. Chris Page took three wickets more leaving Ramblers at 139-8. Ford whom Nomads sportingly recalled had expanded his innings with a spate of boundaries before he fell to Menon who had replaced Woolliscroft,148-9. The last wicket now put on 37 runs to permit a declaration of 185-9 after 46 overs.

After an excellent tea, Budgen and Ghosh made a solid start before Budgen miscued and was caught then Peerless and Menon to fell cheaply to Joe Ireland. Ghosh and Rudveg Insulkar added 48 fluently whereupon Rohan Ghosh played around a full delivery and was bowled. Rudveg having had the significance of the last 20 overs explained to him played a wild shot and was caught. Nomads were now 110-5. Dominic Ramjag was soon out driving airily to deep mid off and Chris Page suffered a duck trapped lbw. Nomads were now into match saving mode with Stan Woolliscroft blocking awhile Hugo Morris struck a few boundaries. With the last ball of the Match Stan was also trapped lbw by Joe Ireland that well known Nomad!

Still to come in and padded up were President Blumberg and the injured skipper Andy Smith with a runner!

Both teams consumed some beers in the Peter May pavilion afterwards and all agreed Charterhouse School was an excellent location. Perhaps in hindsight Nomads should have bowled the young Professional from Barrow in Furness after all our very own Joe had taken three Nomads wickets.
