Nomads batting fails the quest

Nomads reshuffled their side several times by the time of the match so much so that we were short of a bowler but did have on paper a load of batting.Kevin Smith having won the toss put the gypsies in reckoning we could chase a total better than  defend a total. Despite a few loose balls from Vib Yadaz , he and accurate left armer  Andy Robertson removed both openers for sixty.Teenage off spinner Harry Artheur qucikly accouted for number 3 so Gypsies were 66-3. The number 5 batsmen from Yorkshire played Arthur so poorly that skipper Smith set very attacking field in the style of Brendaon McCullum. Somehow in between clouting Arthur for the odd boundary he contived to mis pat the ball between and just short of the close fielders and slowly found his form. He and young Kiwi Cooper had added 90 by lunch.

Lunch was splendid ,red and white wine and lot of port accompanied the sumptous buffet. The two captains, chris Burrows and Kevin Smith said a few words and Nomads President Michael Blumberg thanked Gypsies for their excellent hospitality. Sadly the Gypsies two young batsmen avoided the alcohol and so after lunch made merry with Nomads flagging bowling. Eventually Coopper retired on reaching his century and Keeling was stumped off teenage leg spinner Alex Sharam. Vib Yadav took another wicket before the declaration which came at 280-6 off 46 overs.

David Humphreys seemed set for a big score but he and four others had perished for a mere 75 in the 25th over  mostly to injudicious shots to seemingly harmless but inviting bowling. Robertson, Marshall and Arthur  added  108 runs in 16 overs but got themselves out in the 30s and 40s. So Nomads found themsleves 180-8 with a dozen overs to go.Young Sharam and President Blumberg persidted for a good many overs until Sharam succumbed to a ball that popped.Blumberg played out another over so a draw was seeming likely. Sadly for Nomads skipper Kevin Smith having played an excellent off drive and refusing to run was bowled next ball.

Nomads had lost by the large margin of 92 runs in the 47th over.Well played Gypsies!

During the afternoon Chris Colley, Gipsies' Secretary, joined us as did our host Lord Vestry who enjoyed a glass of Port. Many thanks to Rosemary West for supplying the Port.
