Yadav & Brockton eventually thwart Old Vics onslaught
Nomads fought out a good victory at Essex former premier division champions Chingford CC vs Old Victorians. As always the track at Chingford CC looked a belter and Nomads had no hesitation on batting first upon winning the toss.
Old Vics opened with Roger Bravett, once seamer now purveyor of drifty, thrifty slow-medium and he and his young cohort were dealt with via the broad blades of Damon Wilson and Dom Ramjag. The latter was still recovering from a serious case of “pad rash” following on from Nomads 10 wicket win at Highgate a week or so previously where he did not get a bat! The pair put on 80 odd for the first wicket with consummate ease before a change in the bowing saw young Old Vics young Leggie dismiss Wilson shortly after he had reached a well crafted half century, full of sweep shots and crisply timed cover drives. Interestingly, the leggie (who would go on to take a 5 wicket haul in his 14 over spell) did not bowl leg spin, but a variety of googlies and top spinners which at first, were hard to negotiate.
Bravett then accounted for Dom Ramjag, caught and bowled one handed, very nonchalant, and Ravi Panchal joined the Nomads skipper. The pair put on a stand of 104 in just 16 overs, and with spin the order of the day for Old Vics there were plenty of singles on offer for the Nomads pair. Panchal was dismissed LBW for 44 offering no shot. Nomads then lost their way a little losing wickets at regular intervals, Vib Yadav came and went as did Brockton who was caught and bowled for 76 both trying to up the rate with the declaration in sight and Raymond Lashwayo was bowled neck and crop having an awful slog.
It was left to the vastly experienced pair of Latchman and Blumberg to get the visitors to the 250 mark and after 43 overs Nomads declared on what was considered to be a par total on a good wicket, with a fast outfield. Tea was delayed slightly due to a lack of milk which was rather tardily collected from the Old Vics skipper Bill Burke's car, who had kept tidily behind the sticks during the Nomads innings.
Nomads took the field knowing they would bowl somewhere in the region of 47 overs back at the home side. Nomads and Chingford stalwart Mike Blake opened the innings and lost his partner immediately LBW. However, their no 3 took an amazing liking to the bowling of Nomads debutant leggie Hassan and Vib Yadav's seam. Blake was stoic in defence at the other end but his partner in crime had reached 50 in just the 8th over including a couple of massive 6’s off Yadav.
Unfortunately Spain international Ravi Panchal was suffering from a re-occurrence of shin-splints which limited him to two painful overs before removing himself from the attack. Zimbabwean Raymond Lashwayo found the breakthrough courtesy of a good tumbling catch from Latchman in the gully, Old Vics dangerous no 3 on his way. Old Vics and occasional Nomad Zeeshan batted at 4, Wilson dropped him on 0 off a fast bouncer from Yadav.
The skipper introduced himself into the attack and struck immediately removing Blake, who had grafted for 26 and took a few blows to the body in the process. It became apparent that victory for Old Vics would rest almost entirely with Zeeshan who was larruping the ball merrily though the covers. An in-out field was set, to give Zeeshan the single and bowl more aggressively at the lesser souls coming in down the order. This worked, and worked well, Brockton knocked over three more Old Vics, two bowled and one a good catch from keeper Wilson diving forward off a thin edge. The lower echelons of the order were now exposed and Zeeshan could not ride a quick bouncer from Yadav, caught behind for 82.
Yadav now had his tail up, no doubt licking his wounds from the pasting he received at the start of the innings. He castled the no 10 and Burke no 11 to finish with 4-83 complemeting Brockton’s 4-24.
Nomads were winners by some 40 runs in a very entertaining game. Quite a come-back from the visitors with Old Vics seeming well placed on two separate occasions, and with Nomads only being 10 men (John Thornton caught in an accident at the Blackwall Tunnel did not arrive), this was an impressive performance.
