Nomads/Virgin just thrashed So Many Dropped Catches

Intermittent but heavy rain dictated that a 40 over game became a 35 over game, subsequently reduced again to 32 overs. A very strong mixed team from Thoiry and Dreux (a predominantly Pakistani club) rattled up a huge total through a combination of big cavalier hitting (almost baseball-style), and lamentable catching by the Virgins. Their opener, who went on to score a ton, was dropped off an absolute sitter in the first over (culprit's name withheld). A further 8 chances were spurned. The only chink of light in a dismal session was the bowling of young Ollie Smith who produced a very creditable performance in the circumstances.

Any hopes we harboured of mounting a serious assault on their formidable total were laid bare by some seriously quick and hostile bowling - Andy Smith was hit on the helmet and Doc Bell rapped on the knuckle in the opening overs. Both openers were subsequently dismissed cheaply to be followed in quick succession by Andy Stokes and Richard Woolhouse, so that by the time the skipper came to the crease Virgin were reeling at 16-5! He provided the only real resistance, briefly aided by Jamie Lane, and by the end, when the quick bowlers had returned (fired up by a comment from the batting skipper to the fielding skipper that the brief spell of grenade tossing by their slow bowlers was "taking the piss"), it was more a case of personal survival and keeping some honour in tact. The final margin of defeat did indeed reflect the gulf between the two teams.

This is probably the heaviest defeat ever suffered by a Nomads(Virgin) team.It goes without saying that the Blumberg duck took a great deal longer to accomplish than most of the other top six batsmen however having survived the quick bowlers he senselessly was out attempting to drive over mid off and was caught! Brainless.

Tom Lascelles late assault wins match

This was a match that we did our utmost to try to lose, but thanks to an astonishing innings by Tom Lascelles managed to snatch victory out of the jaws of defeat when it should have been a stroll in the park (is that enough cliches in an opening sentence?). An altogether vastly improved performance in the field (with the exception of their captain, who went on to top score with 73, being dropped first ball - culprit's name withheld) resulted in us bowling out a more achetypal Thoiry team for the modest total of 160. A good tight bowling performance was capped by the twin spin attack of the Smiths - not Morrissey and Johnny Marr, but father Andy with his off-spin and 13 year-old son Olly bowling leggies, who whipped out the middle order taking 3 wickets apiece.

We never fully recovered from a poor start, with Stokes and J.Lascelles going early, but opener Russell Mann hung on grimly (and I do mean grimly) but invaluably. He had brief support from Lane (20) and A.Smith (23), but by the time Tom Lascelles came to the wicket at no.9 we had slid to the depths of 99-7, which soon became 111-8. Another ignominious defeat seemed inevitable, but nobody had bargained for what was to follow. An amazing counter attack was launched almost single-handedly by young Tom who proceeded to blast the ball to all corners of the ground with four huge sixes thrown in. Charles Fellows-Smith provided staunch and invaluable support, as much verbally as with any stokeplay, so that when the winning runs were hit with another massive 6 by Tom, CFS had scored 3 out of a winning unbroken 9th wicket partnership of 55.

        Sunshine dazzles Nomads/Virgin

Heavy rain made any prospect of play fairly remote at one stage, but it relented sufficiently to be able to stage a 30 over match, with bowlers restricted to a run-up on the artificial pitch only. SACC, batting first, made steady but unspectacular progress, until their Aussie (playing his last game for the club) smashed a rapid 49 in the closing overs to bring up a challenging but gettable total.

In reply, Virgin got off to an indifferent start, but a 3rd wicket partnership between Bell and Lane appeared to be steadying the ship and putting us on course for a victory. When they both fell in the same over (the last one bowled by their excellent opening bowler) the elements took over once more. This time, however, it was the sun, not the rain that was our undoing. With a wicket that runs east to west, conditions enabled a pie-thrower from one end to chuck the ball so high in the air that, with a setting sun as a backdrop, the ball became practically invisible, whilst at the other end the sun's reflection against a brilliant white sightscreen caused such a strong glare that even Bono, wearing his vast collection of sunglasses one on top of another, would have stuggled to pick the ball up. By the time we sent Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder out to bat (who probably would have fared better than we were able to) the game had descended into farce, and another defeat was racked up.Even so with only 9 fielders it was incredible with what precision some of our batsmen found the one man in the deep.

The party was 12 strong  so the Hon Sec scored while we fielded and batted twice as required while young Ollie 'rested' after his exercions in the field.
