Nomads win the Entente Cordial Cup

Wakers and Dan Jacobs opened the batting after skipper Blumberg had mercifully won the toss and batted for we were far from all present at the start, romantic contortions delaying Heron(from Nice) and Ilija (from Cannes)while Paul Southam never arrived at all! Paul and Dan batted to good purpose with many quick singles. Once they had both departed for 87 the scoring rate slowed  as Chris Heron and Mark Surridge put on 91 finding the lush damp grass an impediment to boundaries and the bowling accurate. Nick Lee's urgency led to Matt Jupe's run out but a total of 206 was achieved, probably 20 or so below par.

Krunic bowled a mean opening spell and once over the hippiegippies so did Matt with the result that Entracasteaux were way behind the clock.however the introduction of Wakers' leg spin brought three wickets and so the the top order pair of  Uddika and Roshan came together. They transformed the innings so that Lee's bowling of Uddika on 27 was vital. Yet Roshan continued in fine form despite wickets falling at the other end to Surridge.Had he stayed Entrecasteaux would surely have won but in trying to keep the strike and protect his partner he was run out rather needlessly in the circumstances. Chris Heron rather reluctantly entering the attack took the final wicket and Nomads had won by 14 runs with 14 balls to go.

Michael Blumberg on behalf of Nomads was duly presented with the Entente Cordial Cup and Paul Wakefield pronounced Man of the Match.

This was not a warm day so the players were pleased to enjoy a splendid hot lunch at the innings break and afterwards celebrated victory at the village bar.

All the players.Bloomers with the Entente Cordiale Cup and Wakers with the Man Of the Match Award.

                        Nomads arrive late and lose

Nomads were embarrassed by the lack of anticipated palyers originally Mark williams and then Paul Southam. It had also been anticipated that some locals from Entrecasteaux would want to play.In the event we arrived in dribs and drabs, rather late and only nine in total. Then Blumberg lost the toss for a 35 over match.

Krunic bowled another mean spell as did Jupe and wickets fell to Wakers and Surridge the locals looked to be in disaray, six down and not a lot of overs to go.However Riviera staged a powerful counter-attack to reach 186 with one over to bowl.Krunic bowled and took three wickets thus finishing with the excellent figures of 7-3-8-3.

A brilliant lunch was then enjoyed and Nomads seemed to be coasting along to a comfortable win when a flurry of wickets and a disastrous becalming of the run rate turned the innings on its head.Surridge and Lee restored momentum and had reached 122-3 when Lee's dismissal led to a mindless collapse through mostly injudicious strokes when the strategy should have been to keep

Surridge on strike and  conserve wickets with only nine batsmen. With the rate have reached 10 an over Surridge skied a drive leaving Blumberg and Rodwell an unlikely task which they failed miserably to achieve.

Curiously on transfering the scorebook to the computer the Rivierre score was found to be 20 runs short in both batting and bowling however the total of 186 was confirmed by the umpire, our own Merve. So some pretty dozey scoring !

Our late arrival back at Salernes resulted in less than adequate feeding which provoked a mind distorted   discussion on umpiring and technology well into the next morning.
