Balkans Bash – September 2016: Vince Gavin reports

A

superb trip to Montenegro, with cricket to the fore, though also somehow in the background, as the visit to Budva was enjoyed by all, organisation of the whole top notch, including transfers to and from the airport and ground, a boat trip & team meals, Russell Jones take a bow. Nomads finished a creditable third in a competition of six teams.

The team consisted of: Paul Lack, Mark Surridge, John King, Charles Fellows-Smith, Charlie Pritchard, Harry (the token Iraqi …) Vince Gavin, Australians DK & Cat, Abdul (from Rumania), and two Tims from Hampshire (via Sheffield) & Sussex respectively. A workable mix of Nomad & Romany teams. Very ably supported by 3 groupies: Mary Ann, Paddy Burns and Andrew, who watched the games and were even more supportive in the social aspect of the tour.

We lost the first game through failure to a have a huddle beforehand, but mostly indifferent fielding. We binned any concept of a huddle, simply improved our catching and ground fielding, won the next match quite easily, and the following day comprehensively won the play off, finishing third in the competition. Pick of our players was Mark Surridge, opening in all 3 games and averaging 51. John King & Abdul provided batting cameos enabling us to win our second group game & the play-off, with Mark, Paul, the 2 Tims and John King along with Harry bowling well and taking wickets. In the play-off on final’s day some stunning catches were held, all 11/12 contributed to the games, with no passengers.

Sadly Paul Wakefield pulled out at the last moment due to personal issues, we wish him all the best in resolving those. Peter Doyle was a no show, however became something of a legend during the tour, with comments about all of us having to make do with a single, en suite room each (complete with twin beds …) as well as his magic figure of 75 kilogrammes peppering many a conversation.

All in all a very good trip, no doubt the Nomads will be back next year, wherever the ‘Balkans Bash’ takes place.
