Nomads bowlers secure victory shortly before the rain came
In a second contest against Montenotte at Highgate CC in as many weeks, Nomads prevailed by 106 runs.
Exactly two weeks prior Montenotte had clung on for a draw, so for this game the Nomads had assembled a strong XII, and this was communicated to Montenotte vice-captain Ted “Tuffers” Hopkinson. He therefore invited Nomads captain Tom Brockton to bat first having won the toss. Runs were expected to flow given the small ground and strong Nomads batting line up.
Despite Vic Kandampully & Damon Wilson flaying Montenotte opening bowler “Snowy” White for some 32 runs from his opening two overs, things did not initially go to plan. First Wilson was controversially adjudged LBW by Derek Manners off the bowling of Hopkinson, and Kandampully followed soon afterwards for a swashbuckling 40, clean bowled.
A further three wickets fell relatively quickly, as Brockton (caught & bowled by tall West Indian quick “Junior”) Jon Thornton (bowled) and Ash Arora (another contentious LBW, this time given by Chris Moran) all fell, leaving the Nomads 116-5 with a rather lengthy tail to follow.
Fortunately Tom Marshall & Joe O’Gorman consolidated well, and the Nomads passed the 200 mark after around 30 overs. The innings was ended with a flourish by Bank of England CC’s O’Gorman, smiting Hopkinson for 28 from the final over, which included 4 sixes; this rather chastening experience subdued the previously gregarious Hopkinson considerably for the remainder of the day.
Nomads declared on 231-5 off 33 overs, giving Montenotte around 50 overs to bat-Nomads were mindful of their opponent’s obdurate approach 2 weeks previously.
After tea Montenotte commenced their response and Tom Marshall made an early breakthrough, the opening batsman feathering an edge behind to Kevin Smith. Further wickets did not immediately follow however, as Marshall, Paul Fielding and Ben Butcher toiled on a lifeless pitch against batsmen intent on merely surviving-at no point did the Montenotte run rate go past 3-an-over, despite the small size of the ground.
However the game changed when Indian chinaman bowler Arora was brought into the attack, by which stage Montenotte had progressed to 60-1. Turning the ball considerably, he completely flummoxed the Montenotte batsmen and picked up a deserved 5-fer, including that of the obstinate wicket keeper Paul Furness, who had been key in Montenotte escaping with a draw last time out.
Several of the lower order resorted to mindless slogs, with the inevitable fatal consequence. Smith’s quick hands behind the stumps supported Arora well. Chris Page also picked up two wickets as the Montenotte batting line up crumbled, with six ducks in total. Montenotte’s number 4, Plum, finished with 53* and was the only batsman to play Arora with any semblance of ease.
It was left to Andy Marshall to wrap up the game with two wickets of his own, a well-protected Charlie Meyers being the final wicket to fall, LBW, in increasingly dark conditions. 10 minutes later torrential rain fell; a comprehensive victory secured in the nick of time.
Nomads repaired to the Highgate bar to toast the win and Ash’s 5-fer, in his final game before returning to Mumbai. Several Nomads then dined at a curry house on Turnpike Lane to end an enjoyable evening despite the bland food.
Interested spectators included Andy Collins and his friend named Steve, Nik Shelley-Smith (who was, unsurprisingly, late) as well as Nomads president Michael Blumberg, whose glass was generously kept full with rosé wine from Châteaux Giscours. There was however a moment of panic for the president when his full glass was “disappeared” temporarily by mischievous Nomads.
