Newton & de Silva thwart Nomads

Nomads, looking to do the double over Montenotte this season travelled to Keith Alexander’s home club Crouch End Calthorpe for this mid-week fixture. Tom Brockton won the toss and elected to bat on what looked to be an incredibly dry wicket somewhat reminiscent of the Gobi desert and opted to bat first. Runs on the board would be all important and Keith Alexander opened up with the in-form Gautom Menon playing his final game of the 2013 season. Alas, Alexander’s stay at the crease was to be a short one as he was out for a 2nd ball 0 off the bowling of the reliable Teddy Hopkinson. Montenotte skipper Newton holding the catch at wide mid-off from the leading edge of Alexander’s blade.

Brockers strode in at number 3 and he and Menon began to build a decent partnership. Timing the ball was incredibly tricky due to the state of the track but Gautom picked up Teddy Hopkinson’s fuller length and deposited him over long on for two maximum’s. With Hopkinson’s figures taking something of a battering skipper Newton opted for a change in the bowling. Menon was adjudged LBW for 27 off the impressive left armer and he then repeated the dose to clean up Rohan Ghosh soon after for just 13. Smith and Brockton looked to push the score forward and approached the 100 mark after 18 overs. However after Brockton had registered his half century with a late cut for 4, Smith was unfortunate to be deceived by the sluggish nature of the wicket and was bowled when pulling, the short ball not getting up as much as Smith expected, crashing into his off stump. Smith on his way for just 9.

Although runs were coming at over 5 an over Nomads had lost 4 wickets by the time the drinks break was taken so the partnership between Brockton and Aussie drummer Damon Wilson was to be an important one. They did not disappoint, putting on a sterling unbroken partnership of 164 in the remaining 18 overs before the declaration. Brockton moving seamlessly to his century and Wilson with a swashbuckling unbeaten 88. The chalk and cheese nature of the partnership really did have skipper Newton pulling out his hair regarding field placings as Wilson with deft lap-sweeps and ferocious cut shots and Brockton with cover and straight drives milked the bowling with consummate ease. With the field largely back on the fence defending the boundaries there were plenty of 2s and 3s on offer and the pair ran well between the wickets taking on the arm of most of the Montenotte boundary riders. During this partnership not one chance was created by the Montenotte bowlers, and Alford / Meyers bowled only a couple of overs between them with even less success than usual. The pair walked on having got Nomads to a commanding position of 255-4 dec from 38 overs. Montenotte would have to score at approaching 6.5 per over to overhaul this score.

An enjoyable tea was taken in the gorgeous late afternoon sunshine and Noamds took the field in buoyant mood boasting a balanced bowling attack. Barnes man Chris Chambers and Surrey over 50’s campaigner Oliver Croom-Johnson took the new-ish cherry for the Nomads and Croom-Johnson in particular found exaggerated movement off the seam causing all sorts of problems for the Montenotte cricketers, particularly with his off-cutter. Runs were hard to come by and the pressure told as quick work from Rohan Ghosh in the covers and an arrow like throw to keeper Mark Oppe resulted in a run out (by over a metre) and the opening wicket for Nomads. Wilson then pounced at short cover to claim two catches in quick succession, Croom-Johnson dismissing the dour Furness and Chambers taking the prize scalp of Razvi. With victory all but out of the question, Montenotte were now 32-3 off 14 overs.

Chambers (7 overs 1 for 18) was replaced by Brondesbury overseas Rohan Sur and his flighted off-spin created two quick wickets for the Nomads, the latter being the scalp of the limpet-like Plumb who was dismissed advancing down the track in the pursuit of runs only to be smartly stumped by Oppe, who was having an impressive afternoon behind the stumps. Montenotte were now 5 down but the two best players were now at the crease, skipper Newton and Highgate 1st XI cricketer Johan de Silva. With Croom-Johnson (7 overs 1 for 13) now out of the attack, the pair frustrated the Nomads players with a series of fine strokes, Newton happy to sweep Sur and Andrew Smith and de silva quick onto anything vaguely short.

The pair began to take a liking to the bowling of Sur (11 overs 2 for 66) and Brockers began to juggle his deck in the pursuit of a wicket which would open the flood gates and expose the soft Montenotte lower order (Alford, Meyers et al). This wicket did not arrive, and the Montenotte pair added a fine century partnership to dash any hopes of a Nomads win. Newton reached a deserved 50 in the final over of the last 20 and Fernando raced into the 90’s with more cavalier stroke-play. He was to miss out on what would have been a deserved hundred, but his 94* was a fine knock none the less. As the final delivery of the 20 overs was bowled by Rohan Ghosh Montenotte had finished on 160-5 from 39 overs, some 96 short of a winning score but a valiant fight back none the less.

A draw the result, but Nomads certainly taking the plaudits with a good effort in the field with impressive ground work and all of their catches taken. Brockers bought a jug for his ton as did Newton for his half century for Montenotte, with both sides socialising together until well after 9pm. Our thanks to umpire Ken Smith and scorers Peter Gilbert and Beryl Casale for their support during the day. Nomad Andy Collins was also an interested spectator during the latter part of the afternoon.
