Nathan Lamb ton & Brockers fifer secures Nomads win
Nomads were victorious at Wembley CC vs Montenotte on Thursday as we dodged the looming showers successfully all afternoon. Nomads won the toss and elected to baton a slow/low pitch, the thought process being that the track would probably get worse as the day progressed.
Rupert Style and Olly Smith opened for Nomads and Smith was quickly on his way bowled by a big nip-backer from experienced seamer "snowy" White. Occasional Nomad Eddie Hopkinson was bowling impressively from the Sudbury Court end and it was hard going for Style and no3 Nathan Lamb. The introduction of spin (nee flighted filth) from messieurs Meyers and Alford did provide some rest bite for the visitors then Style was out LBW with the score on 42.
Keith Alexander and Lamb then forged a sterling partnership with both players finding their touch on the slow track. Alexander was watchful at first but then got the reverse sweep out of the locker to good effect. He was unfortunate to be given out LBW when in full flow, Andrew Smith and Vince Gavin both perished in the pursuit of quick runs but Lamb was growing in confidence and finding the boundary with increased consistency as he neared a well deserved century. Skipper Brockton joined Lamb for the final few overs of his innings and once past a hundred he accelerated with a smite over the sightscreen for 6 before being bowled for 109. Brockton and debutant Sean Reilly added a pugnacious 30 in the final two overs before the declaration enabling Nomads to declare on 212-6 in 42 overs.
Andrew Smith and returning Nomads Andy Marshall took the new ball for Nomads and although both bowled tightly it seemed the luck was not going their way, snicks evaded the close fielders and mis-cued shots amazingly evaded the cover ring. Smith deserved the first wicket, well taken by Reilly at short cover. However Montenotte were well placed at 90-1 as the 20 overs commenced. Brockton introduced himself into the attack and found his inswinger immediately. He was rewarded with wickets at regular intervals as his 9 over spell yielded a 5 wicket haul. Keith Alexander was exemplary behind the stumps with a couple of smart catches off Brockton and a wonderful stumping as opener Rezvi played and missed, then lifted his back leg as he overbalanced.
Nomads had a sniff of victory. Andy Marshall was re-introduced into the attack and with overs running out he took the important scale of Mike Furness, well taken again by Alexander. Could Nomads dismiss limpet like no11 Charlie Meyers in the final few overs? Marshall was equal to the task, spearing in a quicker ball that rapped Meyers on the pads, the finger went up from the Middx County League Umpire and Nomads were victorious by some 80 odd runs with just a handful of overs remaining. Hopkinson was left stranded at the other end and Montenotte had fallen from the comparative safety of 90-1 to 122 all out! A thoroughly professional performance in the field from Nomads with Alexander, Smith & Reilly all pouching fine catches.
Celebratory jugs in the bar from centurion Lamb and 5 wicket haul taker Brockton lead onto a prolonged spell of imbibing and chatter with the opposition and the last nomads left past 10.30pm.
A very enjoyable match with two interesting debutants Aun Heider Bilgrani(Ali) who took his first Nomads wicket and larger than life Sean Reilly who hit his first Nomads six(in fact two)
.
