Nomads bowling falters as Montenotte tail swing to victory
When John Olive-in slower mode, bowled Stanmore overseas Dutta for 58, reducing Montenotte to 156-7 Nomads sensed victory. Furness had been blocking away at the other end and now Ted Hopkinson joined him with a few overs to go and 40 to win. Ghosh after a good spell taking three wickets had tired and been hit for a couple of sixes and suggested coming off, Iggy 'spin it sideways' declined to bowl so Eddy Barreto resumed from the far end instead of Ghosh. Unfortunately the accuracy of his opening spell deserted him and in 2.3 overs he went for 24 runs as Ted swung with abandon. Furness meanwhile came out of his shell and hit Olive for two fours although playing and missing several times as well and so a stand of 40 resulted, Montenotte had won with 3 balls to spare.!
Earlier on the finest afternoon of the season so far Nomads skipper on the day won the toss and batted, a decision forced upon him by the late arrivals of several players. Debutant Dhruv Raman and Rohan Ghosh added 83 for the first wicket in 18 overs. Nootan Shah has taken a hatful of Nomads wickets in previous matches and it was his no turn flighted left arm slows that broke the partnership when Rohan caught in mis decision hplayed on via his boot. Fahad's stay was brief mistiming a drive into the hands of cover,103-3. John Olive set about the bowling and looked set for a big score and a serious acceleration to our innings. It was more than unfortunate that he was adjudged lbw on 15. Without Suraj Vithiani a big hitter who was lost South of the river between construction sites our middle order succumbed cheaply.
Chris Wilson swung with gusto while Dhruv maintained his stready momentum and these two added 30 before the last over was signalled. Dhruv swung and was caught in the deep, the young debutant had batted well but was somewhat bog down by Montenotte's leading spin bowler from Stanemore Dutta. Chris Wilson swung, missed and was bowled and the innings was declared closed in the 41st over, some 20 runs short of par. Montenotte had bowled 40.3 overs in 2 hours 36 minutes and Nomads batting had been a bit sluggish. Ted Hopkinson was most vocal at being deprived of a potential hat trick. With the tea extended to 35 minutes this left Nomads 35 overs ish to bowl out Montenotte.
After an excellent buffet tea Nomads opened with Olive and Barreto and soon had three cheap wickets. Salter and Dutta not without blemish rebuilt the innings adding 88 both using their feet well to the slow flight of off spinner Bhavita Gajipra. Salter mistimed an on drive off his toes hitting it straight at Chris Wilson who took the catch with a huge smile. Rohan then took two more wickets removing both Newton and Mehta for ducks.
With the game evenly poised Furness defending and Dutta scoring regularly a stand of 37 resulted before Olive now bowling his slower variety removed Dutta. Nomads thought they were onto a win but it was not to be as 'Foghorn' Hopkinson smote three fours and a six. He had missed out on a hat trick but had won the match in emphatic manner and was even more vocal about that reminding everyone of his batting pinnacle ,that innings against northwood for Nomads. .
It was indeed a pity that Suraj who would have opened the bowling and given us another bowling option failed to appear but any match that finishes in the last over is a good match. Yet the club captain with a pint of lager in his hand, watching from the boundary, was devastated! Nevertheless a good few pints were sunk with the opposition in the clubhouse afterwards.
