Nomads secure draw vs SoA, but Pykett puts bowlers to the sword at Tiddington CC

Nomads gained a moderately credible draw against a strong South Oxfordshire Amateurs XI on Thursday played at the pretty setting of Tiddington CC in Oxford. Some heavy rain in the area overnight resulted in the start time pushed back to 12pm, but a traditional all day game was agreed on with a slightly curtailed lunch & tea.

Nomads won the toss and in what looked like helpful conditions hoped to pick up some early wickets. However, Vib Yadav and Jonathan Ssebanja were both off colour and were dispatched by the openers Pykett and Johnson. Some irritating drizzle dampened the ball and spirits of the Nomads and the cherry quickly became akin to a bar of soap so much so that even bowling a half decent line and length became virtually impossible. Nomads turned to skipper Brockton and old stager Chris Page, alas both were also flogged out of the attack by a now rampaging Pykett. He reached his century in just the 24th over and although Ssebanja claimed two wickets on the stroke of lunch SoA were in the box seat at 174-2 with Pykett dangerously unbeaten.

After a lovely lunch and no rain for 45 minutes the Nomads re-took the field, and guess what, it started drizzling again. Nomads did take a 3rd wicket, film director Sam Mendes well taken by Brockton at 1st slip off the bowling of Jason Soames for a 3rd ball 0 the first over after lunch. Mendes then amazingly had a personal errand to run, packed up his kit and was not seen again for the rest of the day. All this time Pykett was continuing on his merry way until he missed a straight one off Soames Snr (Gerard) to be dismissed for a boundary laden 148, scored in double quick time. Soames then repeated the dose cleaning up Peter King for a swashbuckling 38 and as the declaration loomed Page took some solace from the battering he has received earlier by claiming the wicket of Charman, taken by Jon Thornton at long off. SoA declaring on 294-6 from just 36 overs, Gerard Soames the only bowler to have bowling figures to shout about.

Nomads had an experienced and importantly long batting line up, and with plenty of overs left in the game there was some who thought victory could be attained. The rain had now relented entirely and the remainder of the game was played in dry but very humid conditions. The Nomads lost Dummer early in the piece, then Thornton followed almost immediately. A lot rested on Ssebnaja and Vadav and although the pair added 54 both were dismissed when looking set. Ssebjana’s dismissal was most frustrating, chipping tamely to Pykett at mid-off, looking to go over the top as he had done so successfully in the fixture 12 months prior. Nomads were now at 6s and 7s, Brockton joined Sean Reilly’s younger brother and the pair looked to re-build the innings. Reilly and Jason Soames were both caught behind off the burly seamer Launchbury who had a very impressive leg-cutter up his sleeve which was used to good effect, and although the latter Nomad + father Soames added 50 stands with Brockton the Nomads subsided meekly to 206 after 49 overs. The game from a Nomads perspective, was summed up with Brockton being dismissed off the final ball of the day trying to heave Luxford for 6 only to miss the ball entirely. However, his 72 had at least given the Nomads scorecard a modicum of respectability.

After the game, both sides lingered (very) long in the bar, SoA skipper Nick Pykett rightfully receiving many plaudits for his excellent hundred. Our thanks to the SoA and in particular Tiddington CC for the use of their ground and facilities on a day where many other clubs would have opted to protect their square and call the game off. Nomads look forward to returning to Tiddington later on in the season, where we trust Pykett will resume his role as club ambassador, captain and no10 batsman !
