Nomads battle for draw against strong SoA XI at Tiddington CC
Nomads secured a credible draw (3rd in 3 years) againstthe South Oxfordshire Amateurs at the pretty setting of Tiddington CC near Thame. SoA skipper Nick Pykett elected to bat first and in warm weather a more youthful Nomads XI took the field. Tom Marshall and Vib Yadav took the new cherry butthe SoA openers looked in confident form before Yadav ran out Lee with a directhis at the bowlers end.
It became apparent this was a pace off the ball wicket so Butcher, Mishra & Page bowled near 30 overs between them with support fromSoames with his slow cutters. Butcher took 4 wickets, young Jonny Laxton, son of Jerry, impressing behind the stumps and Charlie Simmonds, son of Richard, gazelle like in the field. Despite a fine century from Russell and a swashbuckling 90 from Miller the Nomads stuck to their task and restricted SoA to 266 from nearly 50 overs.
A cracking tea was laid on by the Tiddington CC clan, and wine flowed during the interval period. This was festival cricket at its best. After some 90 mins umpire Blumberg decided, rightly, that we should go and play some more cricket so Kandampully and Aussie Dillon went out to bat. They put on 82in good time and when the in form Kandampully was bowled by the burly Matt Launchbury. Yadav strode in at no3.
SoA now had the seamers off and spinners on & Dillon was getting bogged down, however Yadav was looking in good touch and the pair got Nomads up and over the 100 mark without too many alarms. Dillon was then stumped with the score on 103 and Yadav followed soon after. The top 3 allscoring 40s but no one going on to get the 100+ needed to realistically over haul a score over 250. Nomads then lost a cluster of wickets, Brockton and Thornton both dismissed without troubling the scorers, but the innings was rebuilt by youngsters Marshall and Simmonds who scored 30 and 22 respectively.
Skipper Pykett introduced himself to bowl some trashy offspin and he surprisingly took 3 wickets as the wicket continued to takeprodigious turn. Nomads were now in the mireand 267 was looking a long way off. Gerard Soames and Jonny Laxton fell in quick succession and it was left to Div Mishra and Chris Page to survive the final 7 overs. SoA had 5 men round the bat, ball turning square, vociferous appeals, but the pair were equal to the task. Nomads 9 down and some 37 short of the target.
After the game a BBQ was laid on for both sides, plus thecustomary game of Aunt Sally, which was also a draw at 5 Dolly’s each. Another great day at Tiddington CC against a skilled sociable SoA XI. Our thanks to Tiddington CC, Nick Pykett in-particularfor making the Nomads so welcome again.
