Nomads too strong for youthful HWR

The Nomads powerhouse rolled on with a comfortable 85 run win over our old friends at Hampton Wick Royal. Their pretty ground in Bushy Park looking resplendent in the summer sunshine as the sides assembled for a 2pm start in 30 degrees.

HWR had a youthful side, with only three senior cricketers in their ranks, the rest were aged between 16-20. Nomads had their usual mix of youth (James Hamilton), experience (Steve Dummer / Andy Marshall) and old stagers (Chris Page). A good contest was expected. Taylor won the toss and inserted the Nomads, mainly based on comments from HWR supremo Brian Philips that the Nomads had a pretty formidable side for a midweek game. He was correct!

James Alder (former Barnes 1st XI skipper) and Nomads skipper Brockton opened the innings and added 86 with Alder the aggressor contributing the lion’s share of the partnership with crisply timed drives and lofted shots of front and back foot. Indeed when he departed for a well-made 67 featuring 10 boundaries, Brockton was joined by Dummer Nomads were already ticking along nicely at just under 5 an over.  The pair added 90 in good time, Brockton accelerated after his sluggish start taking a liking to Germain and Goodwin to go from 30 to 70 in 9 overs. When he was dismissed for 73, also with 10 boundaries, Kandampully accompanied Dummer to a classy 50 and Kandampully started to look more like his old self in an unbeaten knock.  Nomads in the box seat declaring at 220-2 from just 39 overs.

With a largely spin orientated attack, the Nomads would bowl in the region of 45 overs back at HWR.  Tea was superb, lovely homemade treats and cold juice to quench the thirst of the Nomads players (except Dummer, Page, Kandampully & Brockton who opted for a chilled Birra Moretti instead).

With new ball in hand and the sun on his back Nomads James Hamilton tore in with the new cherry and accounted for Germain for a second ball duck, feathering a catch through to Duncan Ellis (“he aint droppin that” exclaimed professor Page).  One of HWR’s key batters back in the hutch early on. However, this brought their overseas Pakistani pro to the crease. He looked like a million $s from ball one, on a wicket that was not always easy to time the ball on, he rocketed to 50 with consummate ease (12x4s) in a completely one sided partnership.  His 50 brought up with a disdainful pull over square leg, in just the 7th over.

Nomads were looking a little worried, young James Hamilton effectively flogged out of the attack. Another 5-10 overs of Ali and Nomads generous declaration would be given “Crombie” like status by the Nomads President who was looking on from the sanctity of the HWR balcony on the 1st floor of the pavilion.  A change was made and Butcher’s first ball was on a length but larruped at Brockton, stationed at mid-wicket who jumped up one handed to pluck the ball from the air and dismiss Ali for an even 50.

From then on, looking at the calibre of the HWR batters a Nomads victory was never in doubt. Skipper Taylor was one of Andy Marshall’s 3 wickets, who bowled with skill on a helpful surface for the slower bowlers. At times Ben Butcher was unplayable and had five men round the bat as the HWR batsman could not cope with his changes in pace and length. Duncan Ellis was given a real workout behind the stumps, to which he kept with skill and presence of mind to stump Le Fevre who lifted his back leg after attempting to sweep Butcher.  Butcher also ran out Coles deflecting the ball back onto the stumps off his own bowling, the unlucky batter on his way for 0, one of four ducks in the HWR line up.

With the game pretty much dead as a contest “the professor” was introduced and while still clearly not 100% (“me back urts” he stated) he took the last 3 wickets to fall.  Hewitt stranded on 42 after grafting for nearly 20 overs. The final wicket was a good snaffle from Kyle Bradley at short cover, bordering silly point. HWR well off the pace, finishing on 135 all out with just over 10 overs of the 20 remaining.

With a 7pm finish a few cold Birra Moretti were enjoyed by the Nomads, as usual being the last to leave the pavilion long after the home side had departed. As the sun began to set the remaining players were treated by the arrival of several deer to the ground.

Interested spectators included Nomads Iggy Chowdhury, Alistair Evans-Gordon and President Michael Blumberg.  Brian Philips of Hampton Wick Royal was also an interested onlooker, enjoying pints of Gin & Tonic during the warm afternoon! Our thanks to Caroline Hamilton for scoring for the Nomads.
