The  match in 2015 coincided with the 200th anniversary of Waterloo where among others MCC were represented and played Belgium with two Nomads involved. The match in 2016 coincided with the July 14th Festivities in France which ended in tragedy. However Skipper Stokes was moved to write about another anniversary that of General Kaseem's Coup in 1958 and the murder and mutilation of the Harrow School educated young King. This year's match coincided with the anniversary of the murder of French Revolutionary Jean-Paul Marat in his bath by Charlotte Corday in 1793. For Olly Smith's observation on the 2017 match  see below.

This fixture in 2015 was played on the same day as the bicentennial celebrations of the battle of Waterloo where two Nomads were attending as members of the MCC tour party. Sadly this year we did not celebrate the occasion, although instead of two Nomads attending the MCC touring party, all of our batting line up celebrated each other’s company with a few pints 10 minutes before the toss. Fear not, lead by Captain Stokes (a man who doesn’t believe in time, has never heard of or been to Greenwich, and potentially owns no watches) we arrived on time, and were ready to roll.

*Before we come to the first innings, we have a word from our sponsor*:

On this day (Fixture) throughout history we would like to mention past achievements of Nomads. A little birdy told me that in the previously mentioned 2015 fixture, today’s skipper scored a hundred. It went unrecognised in the match report and his feelings were hurt deeply, so here is a well deserved analysis of his century......Only Joking. Instead we wish Harrison Ford, Julius Cesar, and Patrick Stewart a happy birthday. No relevance to the match, but sometimes that’s just the way the cookie crumbles. Sorry skip.

*And we’re back*

Our Zen Master won the toss and sent in Julian Dean (29) & Steve Dummer(22). The pair kept the score ticking over nicely with some lovely stroke making from Steve, and excellent running from Julian. I can only presume that this was Dean’s debut for Nomads and he had not been given the memo on running between the wickets, as it confused Steve and me (Smith Jnr.) - as we both lost our wickets for 22. (FYI the memo says – most can’t run, and the rest are hung over, so won’t run. If you are neither, still no running, because...well...generally...it’s against our beliefs as a club or something)

Highlight of our innings was the partnership between Johnson and Joseph, with Euan making a delightful 50 and the pair adding 80 to our total. Nomads declare 197 for 6 off 40 overs.

A pleasant tea, with plenty of sandwiches, pizza slices and brownies, was spent by Euan carefully considering how he would bowl, after having kept a keen eye on the wicket during his innings *watch this space*.

John Hodges was one half of the opening bowling attack, bowling well with little luck for 8 overs. The other half was Euan Johnson. Earlier, he came, he batted, calculated the wicket, scored 50, had tea, and prepared his mind body and soul for what he would deliver. Runnup marked. Ball shined. He came running in. And like the opening scene from Saving Private Ryan the batsmen were shelled with high (some very high) full tosses that kept them on their toes and hidden behind their bats. Of course all a masterful plan of deception as the first wicket was taken with an excellent delivery. An interesting spell to say the least.

The rest of the innings was manned by the deadliest slow bowling partnership since Laker and Lock – Smith (Snr.) & Paige. In this spell of the game, 3 catch opportunities were the centre of attention. The first was from the bowling of Mr Chris Paige, and myself fielding at cow corner. The ball smashed out towards me in the deep, I felt my eyes narrow and focus on the ball. Everything went dark, all i could see was the ball coming towards me, the wind blew and it carried a voice that was spoken to me from the maestro himself: “Ketch it”. The voice was not to be denied. The second and third catch opportunities work as a beautiful to and fro. Number 2 coming from that man Mr Johnson again. Andrew Smith bowling, and perhaps the most casual dropped catch I have seen then gave the old man himself a chance to take most certainly the best caught and bowled I have seen only a few bowls later. So all in all, a good team effort.

A solid victory for the Nomads. Shoutout to the captain who did not bowl, did not bat, and (this year at least) did not score a hundred.

Stokes – This is what you get when you threaten me with batting 11. Hope you enjoyed the review, and I took your advice to stay off the booze this week.

Peace out fellow Nomads
