Nomads win inclose contest at Hampton Wick Royal

Nomads continued their winning ways with a tight 9 run win vs Hampton Wick Royal, a fixture which is part of the longstanding HWR cricket week. The Nomads assembled for a 1pm start, expertly marshalled by the jovial umpire Nick Stevenson and upon winning the toss the Nomads elected to bat.  However, the visitors didn’t exactly have things their own way and in the blink of an eye Nomads were 3 down, Dummer,Chalk and Bradley all back in the hutch. Brockton joined Thornton who seemed to be struggling vs the seam attack and he was soon on his way snicking off to 1st slip for 7.  Nomads now in dire straits at 44-3 from 17overs.

Dino Antoniades joined the Nomads captain and a rebuilding stage was required, the two did not disappoint putting on 50 before Dino was caught behind trying to pull the HWR skipper Jermain, who was sporting a rather snazzy pair of Lewis Gregory’s trousers (Somerset skipper) which he rightly received some jip from the Nomads players later when he came out to bat.  Brockton was motoring along and had now passed 50 and with the field spread there were plenty of singles on offer, plus boundary 4’s to the shorter boundary located towards the pavilion. Although the wicket was far from a belter, batters benefited from the exceptionally fast outfield. Basking in the summer sunshine swashbuckling all-rounder Jon Gibson joined the Nomads captain and they forged an assertive partnership of just under 100 to get Nomads to a “par score”. The wicket was starting to play a few tricks, and with messers Marshall and Butcher in the Nomads ranks the feeling was anything over 180 would be tricky to chase.

Gibson was dismissed just before the declaration for a pugnacious 33, and Owen Marshall, or O-Mars as he is often know, accompanied Brockton to his hundred which contained 14 boundaries. A good recovery from the visitors and a score of 191-6 from 43 overs was certainly one the side felt confident about.

Tea is always quite an event at Hampton Wick, and this year didn’t disappoint, with the sides taking opportunity for some feet up while watching England thrash Australia in the World Cup Semi Final at Edgbaston.  A cold Birra Moretti went down very well with the warm treats on offer from the HWR kitchen.

The home side took the field with two talented youngsters opening the batting, Oliver and Jones. The latter scored a rather bright and breezy 48 before he was dismissed, but the pair added a near 50 partnership.  James Hamilton bowled superbly(apart from a beamer which nearly decapitated one of the HWR batsmen) claiming figures of 2-25 from 8 overs.  Indeed, he took the first two wickers to fall, courtesy of cracking catches from his newball partner Owen Marshall, who was stationed at 3rd slip (sorry Blum, you would not have got near either of those!).

However, HWR had progressed to 92-3 when the 20 overs clicked over at 5:40pm. So 100 off the last 20 with 7 wickets in hand, and importantly captain Germain at the crease. Marshall was replaced by Dummer whose “flat jack” offices caused allsorts of trouble and despite the odd loose delivery he bowled very tidily deserving his 3 wickets.  Butcher replaced Marshall and immediately had Jones LBW, then had skipper Jermain caught at 1st slip (probably not the lowest risk shot, trying to reverse Butcher on a wicket that is turning square).

It became apparent that HWR had held back a few of their bigguns so the Nomads knew that although 5 down the home side were still very much in the game. And so it proved to be with Patel and Browning batting assertively and with no lack of skill to get the home side in the ascendancy. With 6 overs left HWR now needed only 26.  Browning lofted high and handsome but Antonides held onto a steepler right on the long-onboundary, a super catch !

Now 9 down, but Patel was joined by 1st XI no3 Wood, who bizarrely was batting no11. He thrashed Own Marshall back over his head to get off the mark (oh dear we thought), but O-Mars had the last laugh trapping wood LBW 3 balls later to give Nomads a narrow 9 run win. Patel was left stranded 38* at the other end.

The Nomads certainly joined in the cricket week spirit with drinks and social chit chat after the game in the pretty HWR bar, located on the first floor of the pavilion. Summer evening sunshine and spectacular views of Bushy Park certainly helped Brockton’s jug go down rather nicely.

Interested spectators included Michael Blumberg, Brian Philips, Iggy Chowdhury, Chris Page and former Surrey, Gloucester and England cricket Monte Lynch.

We wish HWR all the best for the remainder of their league season.
