Nomads contrive to lose in excting finish

Merrow won this match off the last ball of the match running three as the lack lustre Nomads fielders showing no sense of urgency took their time getting the ball back to the 'keeper. Exciting stuff for the Merrow players and supporters. Indeed it was a last over of incident, curiosity and some swift running by the batsmen.

Merrow required 11 runs off the last over which was to be bowled by our 18 year old opening bowler Rohan Yadav who had bowled a tight spell of 6 overs for 18 at the start of the innings. Nomads stand in wicket keeper elected to stand up. Rohan's first ball beat the batsmen bat but slid down the leg side where the keeper's outstretched left hand  had failed to take the ball cleanly whereupon the Merrow batsmen ran like hell. The keeper retreived the ball and hurled it at the stumps but missed and with no one backing up the batsmen ran a second run which was significant as this put Merrow's centurion  back on strike rather than number eleven. The captain and the bowler asked the 'keeper to stand back but he declined to accept their advice leading to the skipper threatening to send the obstinate keeper off the field. However he stayed and continued to  stand up.

Nomads skipper had placed all the fielders on the boundary and on the leg side this was a far boundary. Rohan's second ball was a dot ball however the next three were hit and mishit to the onside and by the time the boundary bound Nomads fielders had run in so Merrow's batsmen were safely in and so to the last ball. Same field same result.

That Merrow achieved this result or got anywhere near it was almost entirely due to an excellent century by Hall. He should have been caught off Page's bowling much earlier, a real sitter but apart from that it was an innings compiled under considerable pressure with few blemishes. His control of the game towards the end is exemplified by the number 11's stats. This genine number 11 lasted  seventeen minutes at the crease while 4 overs were bowled but  faced  just three balls.

Nomads had in fact achieved two positions of overwhelming dominance in the match only to squander both. Nomads went into lunch at 139-3 off 34 on a pitch of no pace and occassional erratic bounce. Rupert Style had completed a robust fifty and at the crease at lunch were Keith Juriansz and Rohan Yadav both of whom looked comfortable. One senior member of the Merrow remarked as they walked off " We may be facing a total of 300 here." Now last year Nomads went in to lunch on 153-3 off 28 overs but after the excellent Merrow lunch subcumbed to 193 all out, 7 wickets for a mere 40 runs. This year Nomads went from 139-3 to 199 all out, 7 wickets for 60 runs but including a late collapse of five wickets for 2O runs.  Indeed many of the dismissals were soft catches. The excellent Merrow lunch and Port had struck gain!

At lunch Merrow's skipper a Cornishman who had relocated to Merrow post referendum made a short speech welcoming everyone and thanking the ladies for such a fine spread. On behalf of Nomads Skipper Andrew Smith thanked Merrow for their warm hospitality.

When Nomads took the field all went very well. Peter Sumner induced four wickets by way of four catches while Rohan Yadav had bowled tightly and was unlucky not to take a couple of wickets too. Div Mishra took over from Rohan and took three wickets, all bowled. Merrow slumped to 22-3, then 70-6 and 102-8.

Merrow required 98 runs off a possible 15 overs with two wickets left. For Nomads this lokked likely to be a substantial victory and yet number 10 steer proved to be an obdurate tail ender and useful partner for Hall. The required run rate was maintained.

Keith Juriansz replaced Mishra and the Skipper replaced Chris Page with ten overs to go and 65 runs required. Keith strayed leg side going for 20 off 4 but then conceded 11 off his 6th over. Andy Smith went for 5, 8, and 11 before bowling Steele for a useful 14 runs and then a potential redeeming tight 4th over,  just 3 runs.

And so to the last over and Merrow's triumph. Nomads skipper was exultant. "A last ball win by 1 wicket, everyone batted and all the bowlers bowled. A brilliant day"!

Some other Nomads  Rupert Style who had a hit a good fifty and Keith Juriansz a useful 37, Peter Sumner with 4 wickets and Viv Mishra with 3 wickets wondered why they had tried so hard for the game to be thrown away. Young Rohan complained that all the fielders were on the boundary, quite crazy the young man declared.

Two contrasting  views indeed. Most of the Nomads sat indoors after tea, drinking and discussing the match. Centurion Hall and Fifty man Rupert bought jugs and the Nomads skipper full of bonhomie bought lots of drinks for the opposition and friends watching the Colts match outside. A 'brilliant day' he later wrote to the Nomads club captain.

If dear Ian Crombie had been watching the game from a heavenly deck chair he would have been proud indeed for Nomads this day had indeed done a 'Crombie'.

Much thanks are due  Merrow's hospitality.
