The victorious Nomads team
Jason Soames excels at the 'Cradle of Cricket'
Nomads have been visiting Hambledon for ten years without success notwithstanding washed out an cancelled matches so when the Hambledon wicket keeper to let through two byes there was much celebration in the Nomads camp. That we won was very much due the youngest member of the team Jason Soames top scoring with 76 but earlier running out three of the top order with a fine exhibition of sharp fielding. Jason's three run outs were complemented by two direct throws from Chris Royals. Five run outs is a rare occurence. Thankfully the weather stayed sunny and dry all day , a fortuitous break in a week of heavy showers.
Hambledon's skipper won the toss and elected to bat. Nomads opened with Sanjay Beri seam and Jason Soames off spin.
Hambledon's batsmen found runs difficult to score and their running between wickets left much to be desired except from Nomads' point of view. Sanjay was to bowl 7 overs for six runs and both opening bowlers were unlucky not to take a wicket. After ten overs Hambledon had scored 15 and, at drinks after 20 overs, had reached 52. Willoughby at number 5 was to be the anchor of the Hambledon innings not without some chances missed by Nomads. He top scored with 64 unbeaten and found some lower order assistnce from J Morris and then skipper Mark Le Clercq enabling Hambledon to declare at 171 after 49 overs. Nomads had employed seven bowlers all of whom had bowled well and the ground fielding had been excellent.
After a sumptuous tea Nomads opening bowlers became the opening batsmen. Hambledon opened with a dibbly dobby seamer from the pavilion end and young left arm spinner R Morris at the other. This was not to Sanjay's liking yet he still swung the bat to good effect hitting one six onto the pavilion roof while Jason Soames hit some early boundaries before reverting to a more cirumspect role. Nomads had reached 47 in nine overs before Sanjay lost patience charged Ripiner while studying the clouds and was bowled. Steve Dummer joined Saomes and these two had added 32 when Steve smashed a lob from Mark LeClerq to deep cow corner where Chapman took the catch.
Skipper Mark Le Clercq has bamboozled Nomads batsmen, top order and tail, over the years with his high flighted lobs and he was soon to take another wicket as Raymond Lashwayo squandered his opportunity to shine at number 4. Raymond swept a dead straight ball and missed. Oliver Barnes joined Soames and these two put on 43 playing those flighted lobs with care so much so that the skipper replaced himself with Glanfield who promptly trapped Barnes who edged to the keeper. Twenty three runs later Jason Soames was bowled by Glanfield and two overs later he had Gerard Soames caught in the slips. When Ash Arora softly hit the ball to short cover Nomads had lost three wickets for three runs.
Nomads needed eleven runs from five overs with three wickets left Hambledon sensed the potential for a Nomads implosion as Charlie Dickins and the President were seen padding up. However Div Mishra and Chris Royals proved equal the task adding another nine runs before the keeper's lapse brought Nomads victory with eight balls to go.
