 Suraj's fifty restored Nomads innings

Bowlers rampant as Nomads successfully defend meager total at Leatherhead

Nomads pulled off an unlikely win at Leatherhead on Sunday, to register 40 wins for the season. The Nomads arrived in good time, but the ground, and wicket looked rather different than in recent visits to Fetcham Grove, lush outfield and a damp wicket greeted the sides, this would not be a high scoring game.

Leatherhead's skipper Tony Garton won the toss and unsurprisingly inserted the visitors. Andy Smith and Nigel Keess opening the batting for the Nomads. Unfortunately both were to fall victim of the variable bounce (bowled pulling with the ball keeping rather low) and poor Tom Liversidge received a snorter of a delivery which he could only fend to short cover, Crayden jnr taking a good catch diving forward.

Brockton and Ormiston battled away, playing some pleasing shots on the eye, however the outfield turned 4's into 2's (and sometimes 1's) and the score progressed forward rather slowly. The introduction of young speedster McGahey & 1st XI opening bowler Dawes added to the Nomads woes, as a short ball to the Nomads skipper barely got up above ankle height and he was royally castled for 15. Ormiston followed for 10 bowled by an absolute jaffer and with Sajjad Shawl and young Ben Smith following in quick succession, also bowled Nomads had slipped to 53-7. An early finish was looking likely!

Enter Suraj Vithlani and old stager Chris Page, who in an enterprising and gritty partnership got Nomads up and over 100. Page played the anchor role, while Suraj biffed his way to a very impressive 50. He was given a reprieve on 27, Everest dropping him low at first slip off the bowling of Ellis, but apart from that the partnership was untroubled. Good news for Nomads as they were able to declare on 135-9 (Page & Wahi both run out in the attempt of quick runs late in the piece) Vithlani ending on 50 not out having taken 10 from Ellis' final over and hitting more boundaries than the rest of the Nomads side put together. Bad news for Nomads, the wicket was now visibly flattening out and not displaying the sort of varied bounce from earlier on in the innings.

Nomads left Leatherhead a shade over 1 hour and 20 overs to chase 136 to win. Brockton and Shawl took the new cherry for the home side, Shawl immediately into his stride knocking over Mead & Everest early in the piece. Brockton, swinging the ball back into the right-handers had Porter caught behind and then knocked over Dawes 1st ball with a gem of a delivery pegging back the 1st XI players leg stump. Robinson entered and survived the hat-trick ball but some quick thinking from keeper Wahi soon after had the all-rounder stumped as he wandered out of his ground after playing and missing at a Brockton delivery.

Leatherhead were reeling at 25-5 from 14 overs and Chris Page was introduced to the attack. Although far from his best after his battling innings and suffering from a sore lower back Page still took 3 wickets and in tandem with Ben Smith who was charging in and removed the obstinate Ellis with a lovely nip-backer, took Nomads to the brink of victory. This was achieved when Page trapped keeper Crayden LBW to bowl out the home side for just 83 with 6 overs of the 20 remaining. Nomads victories by 52 runs in a very low scoring, but hard fought contest.

As always Leatherhead laid on a fantastic spread after the game, delicious pork & crackling was enjoyed by both side as well as some considerable beer drunk. Once again our thanks to Leatherhead for an enjoyable day and nice to see veteran Clive Huggins back on the field for the home side after illness earlier on in the season.

One UK match left for Nomads, vs Great Missenden Pelicans, please advise Michael Blumberg of your availability if you have not already done so.

The end of season match with Leatherhead is our longest standing continuous fixture since WWII. It used to be an all day match with an alcoholic lunch with speeches and in the evening no one left until the bar was drunk dry in the early hours of Monday morning! Sadly the drink drive Law spoiled this tradition and then for a while many of the Sunday cricketers played Football in the morning making an 11.00am start impractical....and yet!

Being usually the last match of the season photographs were taken at the Leatherhead match. The 1976 photo with both teams is frames and on display in the Leatherhead clubhouse.some others are listed below.
