Nomads pile on the runs but fail to take the wickets

Nomads made the trip to Leatherhead on Sunday for the final (UK) game of the 2011 season. Buoyant from last weeks famous stand between Blumberg, Lamb and latterly Croom-Johnson to stave off a heavy defeat vs Kensington spirits were high as Nomads (for once) had no drop outs during the week. Spirits were further raised as an inspection of the wicket at Leatherhead looked promising, a decent hard track and with blue skies and 20+ degrees forecast a fine game was in prospect.

Michael Blumberg had no hesitation in opting to bat first upon winning the toss and Charlie Peerless and Tom Brockton walked out in the autumn sunshine to open the innings. Leatherhead called upon their 1stXI seamer Crayden to take the new ball and he bowled an impressive first 7 overs, bowling gun-barrel straight and both Nomads started in a cautious fashion. It became quickly apparent that the home sides bowling stocks were not overflowing with other options as a succession of dibbly dobblers were called upon and the Nomads pair began to come out of their shells, generously tucking into the gifts that were presented to them. With 20 overs gone the score had progressed to a healthy 92-0 and Brockton has reached his 50 with a square drive past the statuesque figure of veteran CliveHuggins.

Peerless was also soon raising his bat for a gritty 50 and as the partnership between the pair continued to develop into the 30thover and the home side became somewhat disconsolate in the field with an expensive spell from Symes only adding to their woes. Peerless was given a life on 78 when McGrahie dropped a thick snick behind the stumps, but the home side didn’t have to wait too long to see the back of him as on 88 Peerless was clean bowled by Doland who was back in the attack for his 3rdspell of the afternoon! The pair had registered a partnership of 205 runs in 35 overs and Brockton had reached his 8thNomads century of the season.

With a declaration in sight Leatherhead may have thought seeing the back of Peerless would bring them some rest bite, nothing could be further from the truth as at no3 Nomads had the mighty Sajjad Shawl! He and Brockton added 69 in the remaining 5 overs, with Shawl drilling the ball to all parts of the ground to register a 50 off just 18 balls (6x4 & 5x6). Leatherhead’s players were standing motionless as delivery after delivery raced to or over the boundary off the broad blade of Shawl. Blumberg then called in his batsmen, much to the delight of the home side at 40 overs with 274-1 on the electronic score-board. Shawl unbeaten on 58 and Brockton 118 not out.

A quick turn-around was ensured by the ever so slightly officious Ian Hutchins who was marshalling his 4thNomads game of the season and the players were back on the field, Nomads likely to give Leatherhead somewhere in the region of just over 50 overs to chase this mammoth total. Suraj Vithiani and Shawl opened the bowling for the visiting side and were almost immediately rewarded when McGrahie snicked a Vithiani delivery and Tony Lee dived forward to pouch an excellent catch.

An enterprising stand between Meadows and the veteran Everest looked to give Leatherhead hope but Andrew Smith had replaced Vithiani and was turning the ball square! He bowled Meadows with a beauty and repeated the dose to knock over Mead to leave the home side in all sorts of trouble. Smith was in a superb rhythm and his 15 over spell could have brought him 5 or 6 wickets easily. Umpire Hutchins was unmoved by a number of confident shouts for LBW andRichard Fanthorpe dropped what to flitter footed fielder would have beena sitter at mid-off much to Smith’s dismay. Still his 3 wicket haul had put Nomads in a commanding position. However, Everest was still standing tall and at the start of the final 20 overs had reached 78 not out and the home side’s required target was 139 runs, with 5 wickets in hand…. A photo finish one may have thought ?

With former Nomads President Richard Kershaw among the interested spectators Blumberg went for the jugular and summoned Shawl back into the attack in an attempt to finish the game with Leatherhead poised to attack to overhaul the target. Sadly no-one had told Everest that nearly 7 an over was required and he happily blocked over after over seemingly only intent on bringing up his hundred and finishing the season with a “red-inker” to his name. Blumberg brought in the field, left plenty of gaps for scoring opportunities and only a couple of Bryan Ward and Darren Williams full-tosses were dispatched as slowly but surely Everest crept toward his goal of a century. Shawl picked up a deserved wicket for his efforts and 18 overs in the match, but with overs now running out and Everest looking immovable at the crease a draw was inevitable. The home side illustrated their displeasure by returning to the comfort of the changing room and applause was sparse as the veteran brought up 3 figures.

Leatherhead closed some 57 short of the target set, 6 wickets down, but all credit has to be given to Nomads for rushing through 52 overs in quick time. A draw the result but with one side taking more positives from the game than the other.

Plenty of beer was consumed back in the pavilion, and the Nomads throng stayed for a number of hours toasting another enjoyable season while England's youngsters collapsed against Windies at the Oval!.

Until 2012 gentlemen…. unless you going to on the tour of Spain!
