Nomads bowling wins the day
Nomads completed a convincing victory over Kensington at Barnes thanks to a fine spell of seam bowling from Michael Thewlis who took 5-33 and would have taken more had not the skipper taken him off.
Kensington won the toss and put Nomads in on a pitch that was helpful to the seamers. Bowling and fielding well they contained a useful Nomads line up, importantly securing the wickets of Srikanth 40 and Thewliss 36 just as they may have cut loose and with Nathan Lamb missing a straight donkey drop full toss from Neeraj a mini collapse occurred at 167/169. Sam Blake made the most runs opening the innings and playing some fine drives amidst some airy fairy stuff on the back foot outside off stump. He set off on a suicidal run from an overthrow precipitating a mini collapse from 167-2 to 169-5.
Kensington were very slow with their bowling rate which was making the declaration timing difficult. However Babs Odulawe slogged merrily at the end allowing the skipper to declare at 204-8 off 42 overs bowled in over three hours play!
Following a splendid tea, play resumed in good time for some 40 overs to be bowled at Kensington. After some snicks wide of slips both openers fell to Thewlis. Unmish and Gore added some 47 runs Unmish hitting some powerful straight drives. However Srikanth( left arm spin) replacing James Macdonald( right arm fast) had San caught and bowled and then he caught Unmish at long off off Thewlis. This was a pretty silly dismissal. No sooner do Nomads post a long on than Unmish aims with pin point precision his demise!
Douglas and Marshall then fell for ducks to Thewlis and the innings was in tatters. Jason Moores hit some lusty blows before being well caught on the boundary by the otherwise lame Jeremy Lascelles off Charlton Lamb. Chris Ledger walked off the faintest touch from Lamb and Nayar went for a duck to Srikanth with the innings was now 99-9.
However fast man Wajid was determined to throw the bat at everything and in doing so hit Lamb and Srikanth for an entertaining 30 bringing the total to a more respectable 126 all off 24.4 overs, leaving 15.2 overs to come.
This was not a poor KCC line up with several of the club’s leading batsmen and 2/3 who have scored tons for Nomads midweek as well, indeed at 7,8,9 Marshall,Ledger and Nayar suggest largesse in the batting line up. However no one was willing to get their head down and graft a solid innings against good bowling.
Kensington were minus Jamie and Tim Kelleher the former being married the day before but then Nomads had lost batsmen 1,3 and 4 overnight as well as the useful bowling of James While. Some KCC cricketers arrived a bit the worse for wear after the wedding but this was not reflected in their bowling or fielding though Neeraj might argue otherwise. By the time they had fielded and enjoyed tea they were well prepared for batting.
It said a lot for the depth of availability of Nomads this season that the loss of three top players late did not ruin our side. Of the KCC XI some six had played sometime for Nomads as well and three are members. It was an enjoyable day’s play with good support from Kensington ladies plus all too briefly a Nomad wife and baby and a girl friend plus Joe Ireland.
A good post play session in the bar was had by all where Nomads outlasted KCC by a round or two!
