Grimshaw century wins match after Nomads ease the pressure
On a rare second successive beautiful sunny day Nomads seemed to have got out of gaol only to gift the game Mallards way. In another era this would have been described as a 'Crombie'. In other words just as the opposition are on their knees, take off the rampant opening bowlers and toss up some friendly flighted fiflth to help them on the way. When the fearsome quicks return snicks and byes see the opposition home.
Well it was not quite like that Grimshaw a onetime Birmingham & District League player batted very well for his ton though perhaps lucky to survive early on when While and Terblanche were bowling very well and swinging the ball prodigiously.
A depleted Nomads side were inserted on a damp slow pitch as has been usuall all this season. Within four overs both openers,Lascelles and While, were gone to some undistinguished bowling. Terblanche raced to 26 only to miss a masive hit and we were 43-3 looking down a barrell. Ricci Achillini and Paul Brown added 38 before Brown chipped a gentle catch to mid wicket.Charlton Lamb now joined Ricci and seemed to be enjoying himself when giving himslef al ot of room toe ended a slow long hop to short backward square leg,93-5.
The skipper joined Ricci and these two added a further 53 runs to which Blumberg added nothing-'classic blumberg' remarked Lascelles. Ricci had smashed 89 valuable runs on debut and was obviously thinking about his century celebrations when he played all round and across and over an innocuous gentle spinner from Anderson.
Specialist number 11 Rob Leachman now found himself in the unaccustomed batting position of 8.He missed his first ball and third but smashed the other three for a valuable 8 runs. This finally stirred the skipper who hit his opening and only run first ball next over whereupon Leachman swung and was bowled and by generous agreement our no3 re-apperared as number 9 and was bowled first ball.156 was a much better total than seemed likely earlier in the innings.
After a splendid tea which took a little longer than planned depriving both sides of a few overs While and Terblanche tore into Mallards batting with substitute wicket keeper Ricci kept very busy as the batsmen missed most balls. Quite soon Mallards had lost 4 wickets all bowled and were reeling on 34-4 and most of that 34 were byes. After 8 overs While went in the groin and asked to be replaced whereupon he took over wicket keeping duties from Ricci.
Fearful of the damage Terblanche may have wreaked on batsmen Adams the skipper replaced him with Leachman who soon bowled Adams with a flighted off break,56-5.
Although Mallards were 5 wickets down and with only 2 more fit batsmen to come they had some 18 overs to score 100 against a very ancient fielding side.Charlton Lamb struggled to find a length and was mauled for one over before Terblanche was recalled.Neither Leachman nor Blumberg were expensive but Grimshaw and Chandrasekera were never under pressure run wise and avoided the drive on this slow pitch prefering to cut and pull perilously close to their stumps. There were nevertheless two run out possibilities!
First Terblanche and then Ricci were introduced to the attack but Chandrasekera defended resolutely, snicks accelerated the score, false shots failed to edge, balls missed bat, stumps and keeper and then the enboldened batsmen attacked Ricci's second over to good effect.Grimshaw reached his well deserved century and the match was won by Mallards with 11 balls to spare.
Well we couldn't have lost a nicer bunch of lads, all old Churchillians and this was the final game of their first ever season. analysis of the scorecard does reveal 33 extras conceded against 12,23 byes against 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We repaired to Moller Centre to drink with our hosts and the two veteran members of the Nomads finally left long after sun down biding our farewells to the Polish barmaid.
Judging by the various scribbles perhaps we have signed up Grimshaw for Spain and Ricci is playing at Abinger.
The attractive ground at Churchill college was very large and lush and the boundaries huge..so much so Mallards ran a five.No names mentioned and it was not to either of the oldest members of the team.Twas but a great pity the game was not better supported by Nomads.
The Mallards Cricket Club
This was the first match between Nomads and Mallards and the first visit to the Churchill College ground.
