David Williams signs off in style

Nomads recorded a comprehensive win at Barnes CC on Sunday with many a notable performance. Captain for the day Andrew Smith unfortunately lost the toss and Barnes captain Alex Floulds elected to bat first. Nomads boasted a well balanced side and no less than 7 bowling options so although the track looked an absolute belter the general feeling was that Nomads had the right balance of bowlers to restrict and potentially bowl out the home side.

Pace was the order of the day as the returning Sajjad Shawl now back from a month overseas on business, and the vastly improved Ben Smith took the new ball for Nomads. Shawl was quickly into his stride but Smith struggled initially and he was replaced by David Steele. Steele quickly found the wicket to his liking and knocked over Tom Fahy as the bemused left-hander heaved across the line. Shawl then pounced at mid-on run out the other opener for 15 as he pushed the ball forward only to be run out by a direct hit from the big fast bowler. Smith replaced Shawl and found the pavilion end to be more profitable and he produced an absolute beauty to clean bowl Barnes league 1st XI cricketer Campbell who was defeated by a sharp nip-backer. After 20 overs Barnes struggling to find the rope at 82-3.

Another run-out was completed by David Steele just after the drinks break, the new Kiwi batsman was called through for a suicidal single and was run out without scoring quite some distance with Steele’s throw to keeper Williams being fast and accurate. Brockton replaced Ben Smith (7 overs 1 for 20) but skipper Foulds was looking dangerous and hoisted him high over long on for a massive six. Brockton had the last laugh, clean bowling Foulds soon after but the Barnes skipper had injected some much needed momentum to the innings and Andrew Smith was forced to put out scouts on the deep cover and long-on boundaries.

Ross Ormison replaced Steele and quickly took a wicket but was unfortunate not to claim two as Peerless dropped a straight forward chance at mid-on, and Shawl replaced Brockton in an attempt to wrap up the tail. That he did with some style and the innings was completed by Marcus Budgen who threw down the stumps to take the final wicket. Barnes bowled out 1 over short of the allotted 40 for 206. Nomads would need to score at a hair over 5 an over to secure victory.

After an enjoyable rustic tea Tom Brockton and Marcus Budgen opened for the Nomads and Brockton got Nomads off to a flyer hitting the opening delivery for 4 in both the first and second over. After 4 overs the score read 26-0, but Budgen was on his way for just 4 after lofting a drive to Ward at mid-off from the bowling of left armer Camps. David Williams joined Brockton and their pair continued the assault on the Barnes bowling. Camps was withdrawn from the attack and spin from both ends introduced. Brockton was looking in decent touch and had hit 7 boundaries but on 45 clipped the ball off his pads to skipper Foulds who held on at the 2nd time of asking. Nomads in a good position at 91-2 off 16 overs.

Williams was joined by soon to be father Andy “Mighty Mouse” Hill and the due took Nomads over the 150 mark with a series of imperious blows. Williams was now past 50 and finding the boundary with regular and consummate ease and he and Hill took Nomads to victory with 8 overs remaining. The bowling of Foulds proved ineffective and Williams had struck 12 boundary 4’s and three maximums, the pair putting on an unbeaten century stand. Williams unbeaten on 88 in his final Nomads innings of the 2013 season and hill not out in the 30s. A resounding 8 wicket win for Nomads and their 5th win in the last 6 matches.

Pretty much the entire Nomads XI and Barnes side retired to the idyllic Sun pub in Barnes for some well deserved evening drinks and sustenance after what was an enjoyable fixture.
