There seems to be several discrepancies in the scoresheet. Roydon by batting seem to have scored 4 more and by the bowling 6 more. Nomads seem to be 4 short in the batting but the bowling has them with 7 more! According to the scorebook on re-eexamination Brockton appears to have scored 101 Hm!
It is the President's handwriting, what can we say!

Nomads batsmen rise to the challenge

Nomads travelled to the ground of Roydon CC on the Herts/Essex border on Sunday fresh off the back of a memorable win vs Tiddington the previous day. Unfortunately Charlie Peerless decided to make his way to the ground via outer Mongolia and as he had two others players in his car, including wicket-keeper Hunt the start was delayed by some 30 mins much to the consternation of President Michael Blumberg.

Brockton lost the toss and Jeff Pond of Roydon elected to bat first. Nomads had the experienced pair of Surrey CC veteran cricketers Martin Couch and Oliver Croom-Johnson with the new ball but unfortunately both were off colour and this allowed Pond and his young cohort Brooks to get Roydon off to something of a flyer. 125 was registered for the first wicket with Couch, Croom-Johnson and latterly Brockton proving ineffective. Once to his 50 Pond decided to rather obviously give his wicket away, much to the chagrin of Croom-Johnson and Andrew Smith (who cheered up slightly when he had the diminutive Hakami caught behind by Hunt soon after). Jeff had tea duties to perform!

Roydon were rocketing along at quite a rate and as Brooks was growing in confidence he was finding the boundary with increasing ease and fluency so much so that Roydon changed their normal batting order. The golden arm of Charlie Peerless was introduced and he struck almost immediately having Hitch caught and then stemmed the flow of runs in tandem with Smith. Indeed, the two bowlers took 5-54 in their combined 16 overs, Smith finishing as the pick of the bowlers with 3-35 from 11 accurate overs. Roydon declared on an impressive total of 227-6.

The excellent and copious DIY tea was in place, and once this was devoured Brockton decided to open up with himself and young Olly Smith. Alas, Olly departed quickly as did the usually dependable Rupert Style and after 11 overs Nomads were staring down the barrel at 32-2. Enter Charlie Peerless, and with the bit between his teeth he and Brockton added 120 in 19 overs to push the game back in favour of the visitors. Peerless was looking fluent and timing the ball crisply and the introduction of Hakimi only enticed Brockton further after their earlier spat and he advanced down the wicket to strike him over long-on for a rare maximum.

Once Peerless was dismissed after registering a classy 57 from just 49 balls Andrew Smith decided the time was right for his own brand of cavalier stroke play and the remaining 80 runs were knocked off with some consummate ease. 35 were needed from the final 5 overs but the pair of Brockton and Smith knocked off the runs with 7 balls remaining to give Nomads victory by 7 wickets. Brockton was unfortunately left stranded on 98 not out from 114 balls and Smith a wonderfully aggressive 31 from just 26 balls that earned him deserved plaudits back in the local watering hole after the game where Nomads lingered long with the very hosptable Roydon cricketers.
