Bowlers give Nomads victory
On what was for most part a warm sunny day deep into October Nomads won a close game to finish off the UK season.
Nomads won the toss and elected to bat and found the pitch and the bowling difficult. Indeed after 18 overs in what was a 35/35 over match, Nomads found themselves 64-5. Andy Marshall was undone by a low bouncing long hop which bowled him. Rupert Style was caught behind off a hefty drive, John Olufawo was bowled by a beauty from Mo Dilshan at full stretch playing a forward defensive while Mike Blake miscued a drive off Suraj and Sid Chhibbar hit a long hop straight to square leg.
Sajjad Shawl and Adnan Kapadia revived the innings with a stand of 54 off 5.3 overs before first Adnan hit a long hop to point and Sajjad hit a huge aerial drive to cow corner and was caught, 121-7. Chris Page and Jerry Laxton added fifty before Jerry was stranded plum lbw to a very low bouncing ball. Jerry did not bother to wait for the umpire's decision. Enzo Nicoli hit a quick 8 and Chris Page was run out off the last ball of the innings from a direct throw from the boundary. Nomads had finished on 188-9 somewhat benefiting from the bowling of Harshil who went for 60 off his seven overs.
Johra and Juriansz opened for Barnes Common and had added 23 whereupon Johra hit Enzo for an enormous six then Enzo clean bowled him next ball,29-1. Juriansz and Freedman then added some 78 runs off 14 overs and looked to be taking the game awy from Nomads. However with the introduction of Page who had replaced Enzo from the railway end Juriansz began to lose his poise and may have been stumped several times before he mishit Page into the deep where Enzo took the catch. Sajjad had been recalled at the other end to stem the run rate and hopefully take a wicket. This he did in style bowling Sanjiv Beri first ball. Last year Beri had hit 80 off Nomads and indeed scored a quick fifty for us at Jesus College, a crucial wicket. Barnes Common were now 116-3 off 23.2 overs needing 78 off 11.4 overs.
Chris Page removed the next two batsmen, wicket keeper Haynes caught behind and Vishesh off a huge hit to Enzo in the deep,130-5 off 25.2 overs.Suraj and Freedman added a further 28 but John Olufawo who had replaced Sajjad bowled him for a solid 54. Barnes Common needed 31 off 4 overs, a tall order. Andy Marshall replaced Page and had Suraj stumped.John Olufawo bowled Arun and had Dilshan stumped. Luke Mitchell was run out. The last few wickets fell as it rained heavily.
Both teams repaired to the Coach and Horses pub in Barnes High Street and quaffed a fair quantity of ale before making their way home. This had been a very well contested match played in a friendly atmosphere and with three of the opposition Nomads tourists there was considerable bonhomie in the pub. Bill Rodwell joined us for the latter part of the game and, of course, the pub.
Barnes Common use orange balls. Sight Screens can not be used in what is a public open space and the ground is surrounded by trees and much thick undergrowth into which red balls used to disappear. So first white balls were used but these often quickly became dirty and were replaced by orange.
