Fine win to end season

Nomads finished the UK centenary season on a high note with a comprehensive victory over Kensington CC by 118 runs at the ground of Crouch End Calthorpe. After the match members of both clubs enjoyed Indian cuisine at the clubhouse and determined to repeat the process next year but on what date?.

Both teams had changed from original selection though it was KCC who fared worse losing Jai Singh mid week and then James Pickles on the morning of the match due to over indulgence at his own engagement party the night before. This left KCC short of a player.

Nomads lost Wakefield, replaced him with Faisal Rana who cried off on Saturday so Keith Alexander played though arriving late.

On a beautiful sunny morning Nomads won the toss and elected to bat. The square was somewhat eccentric in aspect since the groundsman had begun putting the table to bed. There was a ditch dug along one end and there was netting over a similarly seeded area the other end. It was agreed that should a batsman hit the ball under the netting it would result in ‘one run’ "dead ball" being called. In the event no batsman on either side accomplished this.!

Elias Hussain, military medium inswing and off cutters at one end and Sunil Amar yet slower seam but away swing opened from the far end. Both bowlers induced some false shots but also bowled a surfeit of long hops which were severely punished. James While and Vince Gavin rattled along before at 61 Gavin swished across a full and straight ball from Sunil Amar and was bowled.

Andy Stokes joined While and these two added 72 runs in 8 overs at which point Matt Marshall trapped While lbw playing a straight one to leg. Joe Ireland now joined Stokes to add 80 in 8 overs. Ireland was caught by Amar off Marshall, the only catch held by a fielder in the innings.

KCC were hampered by being 10 in the field and a mature ten at that but they dropped several straight forward catches particularly off Andy Stokes who was in festive mood with his batting. His first scoring shot was a six and he hit seven more. Stokes retired on 100, his 5th of the year for Nomads.

Keith Alexander finally gave Hussain the wicket he was striving for by way of a catch to wicket keeper San Gore. Hussain did not have a good day, 95 runs off 12 overs but he suffered several drops off his bowling before he broke the KCC record for wickets in a season.

Nomads declared on 293-5 off 37 overs including 12 sixes and 1 five. The sixes caused a lot of lost time yet 37 overs was slow progress. As Nomads were likely to bowl around 50 overs this total was not as daunting as it looked especially as attacking fields were placed for most of KCC’s innings.

Vinoo Nath and Rohan Gosh opened brightly hitting 50 off 11 overs whereupon Ireland who has replaced Fellows-Smith at the far end almost at once induced a false and aerial shot from Gosh who was caught by Russell Mann. Shortly after Joe took a brilliant caught and bowled to dismiss a bemused Vinoo, 62-2. Ireland then accounted for Chris Ledger who hit a long hop straight at Mann and San Gore who swished breezily at a straight full pitched ball from Joe. A perverse shot from an elder statesman in the circumstances and first ball!.

KCC were now 75-4 off 18 overs and with little chance of winning. The question was, could Nomads winkle out the remaining wickets. Marshall and Mitra added a brisk 32 off six overs but then the latter was bowled by Andy Smith who replaced Ireland. Croom-Johnson had bowled an exemplary line and length, 11 overs for 27 but with no reward. Blumberg replaced him and was hit twice for six off long hops by Matt Marshall who set a new record for runs scored in a season for Kensington.

19 was added by Neeraj Nayar with Marshall before he fell to Blumberg as Mann took his third catch of the match at mid off. Marshall looked to be heading for a substantial individual score when he played back and was plumb lbw to Smith. KCC were now 134-7 with 20 overs to go. Ireland replaced Blumberg for the coup de grace and another jug but failed to take a wicket. At the far end it was the brisk seam of James While who finished off the innings accounting for Vivek Rattan and then Sunil Amar. Kensington were all out(10 players) 175 in the 40 over with 12.3 overs to go.

Of the KCC players three had played for Nomads this season and four in previous seasons. Among Nomads one had played for KCC this season and two more in previous seasons. Nomads scorer Bill Rodwell is a member of both clubs and both umpires Brian Wilson and Mike Palowkar have toured abroad with both Kensington and Nomads.

Both clubs attracted supporters who stayed for the curry. For the Nomads Charlton Lamb, Steve Marians, Dan O’Sullivan, Helen Cooper and parents and Annette Tiberghien joined the party while Sunil Patel watched for a while and paid his sub. An excellent season's finale.

* Andy Stokes scored his 5th century this year for Nomads, a record.
