Nomads hang on to draw

Nomads have with occassional exceptions a history of underperforming at Nags Head Meadow and this latest visit was no exception despite the beautiful weather.

Nomads won the toss and inserted Pelicans on a wet pitch that had not been covered during the previous day's heavy rain

This game was one of great contrasts. Pelicans' top three amassed 201 runs Nomads top three just 11. Two of Nomads bowlers took 8 wickets at around 3 runs per over while the other although suffering some missed chances bowled at 6 plus  and 11  respectively per over.

Pelicans opened with father and son Baileys.Promoted from a big hitting role7/8 Josh Bailey hit his maiden fifty snd then maiden century. He  was fortunate as he missed many a good length  ball from Mike Robbins but swung lustily with good timing anything pitched up  as well as any boundary gift balls. The opening Baileys added 86 before father Bailey was caught at slip by Adnan Kapadia off Mike Robbins. Number three old Harrovian Litherland then joined Josh Bailey playing a neat composed innings of 59. The partnership was broken by a returning Robbins with Bailey caught by 'keeper Saraubh Wahi. Then next over Kapadia had Litherland caught behind by Saurabh and Robbins removed number 4 for a duck.

Although skipper Alex Livie hit Robbins was a six he was soon bowled for 11 and Adnan Kapadia quickly removed three more batsman for a couple or runs before Pelicans declared at 225-8 off 43.

After an excellent tea Nomads opened with an experienced pair Style and Blake.Style was adjudejed lbw for a duck then first Andy Stokes and then Mike Blake hit rank long hops straight to mid wicket and square leg. The latter did afine piece of juggling before securing the cath. This left Nomads reeling at 11-3. At 39 and 59 respectivley Jon Thornton was caught at slip and Andy Smith was bowled.

Nomads had lost half the side for 59 chasing 225 and only Jeremy Lascelles showed much appetite for the task in hand which rapidly became one of saving the match. The President jined Jeremy Lascelles and these two saw Nomads to safety with all the Pelican fielders crouched close around the bat.Nomads had salvaged a draw but with little honour.

Both teams lingered long at the Cross Keys Pub until a few Nomads left in search of a curry while the rest continued quaffing ale with the Pelicans President Peter Greenwood, a former Nomads tourist.
