Ben Butcher Fifer seals Ramblers' fate

Nomads ran out worthy winners at the stunning Upper Club ground vs Eton Ramblers on Sunday. Eton mysteriously inserted the visitors upon winning the toss (mysteriously as it was 27 degrees and an absolute belter of a pitch). Out strode Kandampully & Brockton, who had struck a robust 151* against the Ramblers in 2015. Unfortunately the Nomads skipper continued his poor start to the season scoring just 1 after smacking a short ball to square leg in the 2nd over.

Ross Ormiston went in the calf and had to retire hurt so Nomads were in a spot of bother, effectively 23-2. Kandampully and  Andy Stokes resurrected the innings, Stokes striking two sixes but alas, both were dismissed with lunch in sight, Stokes picking out the man at gully and Kandampully top edging a full toss (suspicions of the delivery being marginally over waist height) for 40. Former Durham cricketer Bill  Johnson was then castled for a 2nd ball globe as the Nomads took lunch perilously placed at 113-6. This was a 250 pitch, so anything less than 200 would be very tricky to defend.

With Tom Liversidge & Mike Plant (26) also back in the hutch afer being caught behind a partnership between David Steele and the mighty Sajjad Shawl was much needed. They did not disappoint putting on a 50 stand in good time. Both players looked in good touch, Sajjad (33) hitting a few trademark maximums and Steele (44), pugnacious as ever digging in. Both were dismissed with a declaration of sorts in sight and it was left to Saurabh Wahi and the returning Ormistion (with Plant as his runner) to get Nomads up and over the 200 mark, enabling the visitors to declare on 210-9. This was, on reflection, no better than par on a wicket that looked ripe for batting.

The Ramblers skipper, Hugh Walters opened the innings and looked in good touch, stroking Shawl’s first delivery through extra cover, and 2nd through point for boundaries. Indeed, after 5 overs the Ramblers were rocketing along at a merry pace. Just before the tea break the game changed as Ben Ben Butcher dismissed both openers to be on a hat-trick. Saurabh Wahi took a smart catch standing up to get rid of  Walters for 29.

Tea was taken with the hwith Butcher. Shawl’s opening burst had been unsuccessful and he looked a little out of sorts compared to last season. Butcher took his 3rd and 4th wickets courtesy of a good catches from the athletic Mike Plant and once Johnson struck clean bowling the Rambers left hander for 0 Nomads w/ere well and truly back in the game.

However, Ramblers Ed Neale was looking in supreme form, hoisting Butcher for 4 sixes before holing out to deep mid-wicket for 58 where Brockton took the catch head high, right on the line. Butcher had now taken a richly deserved 5 wicket haul and Ramblers needed 50 to win from 11 overs, but with only 3 wickets left. Steele replaced Johnson whose final over seemed one too many. Unfortunately, although taking a wicket, Steele went for 23 from 2 overs letting the home side back in the game.

Brockton turned to himself and Sajjad Shawl to finish the game & that they did, Plant taking his 3rd catch running backwards at cover off Brockton and Shawl supplying the coup de grass by clean bowling the last man with a fast Yorker. Nomads winning by just over 30 runs in a well played and close fought contest.

Ben Butcher led the visitors from the field, and retained the match ball for his figures of 5-64. After a cold San Miguel in the early evening sunshine at Upper Club Nomads retired to the Royal Stag in nearby Datchet for additional liquid intake. Michael Blumberg was an interested spectator and scorer for the Nomads. Our thanks to the Rambers for another enjoyable contest.
