Too few runs, too many wides
Nomads lost the toss and were inserted. The downs opening attack, south African pro Miliigan and red haired young Crouch(a strong red gene always at Downs) sprayed the ball around but took the early wickets of Blake, ball kept low and Lane , atennis shot made the faintest touch but Lascelles driving powerfully and Thorns driving and cutting seemed to building amajor stand when both fell to the dib dobber in swing of veteran Roberts who had replaced young Crouch. With Woolhouse falling shortly after to Milligan Nomads had suffered a mini collapse 89-2 to 100-5.
Russell Mann now joined Keith Alexander and stoutly supported Keith as he smote the ball all round the ground including three 6s.These two had added 98 and were thretening to take nomads to a useful total when Keith cut airily and was caught at point believing the declaration to be imminent.
Roberts had suffered some punishment from Alexander now took out Tom Lascelles and Charlton Lamb so the skipper joined Mann and with one man short this was the last wicket pair. These two added a mere six runs before Mann was caught behind. However the skipper had been hit by a ball from Hook which rose sharply and trapped the middle finger of his right hand.We were thus one bowler less as well as 40 runs short of target.
Karl Thorns was expected to be more than a handful on this pitch and indeed soon bowled F Crouch but then pulled a muscle and his run up shortened and shortened as did his speed and accuracy. At the other end Tom Lascelles although inducing some playing and missing was suffering a lot of boundaries as well as radar dysfuntion so T Crouch and Milligan were racing towards a quick victory and Nomads an early attendenace at the bar. Woolhouse replaced Thorns and took two caught and bowls, one a remarkable catch. Bowling both Wood and Hunt for ducks and so nearly accounting for Roberts he briefly threatened to give Nomads an extraordinary win. However Roberts and Milligan added 75 runs to insure Downs victory.Yet Woolhouse had more up his sleeve trapping Roberts lbw and then Hook for a duck with ODS still 4 short of victory. So nearly might Simon Rae have fallen too but then having scampered three more runs he faced the legend Lamb.Having prodded at two slow floaters he hit the third for four and we had lost.
The bowling analyses do not look great even though we were a man short in the field.Even Woolhouse in between those five great wickets was hit for 60 off 7 overs. However to bowl 25 wides in a mere 25.3 overs suggests some sort of visual impairment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And yet with 11 batsmen and fielders and a fit Karl Thorns it may have been such a different result. It was however a very enjoyable match with a splendid tea and good ale in the sumptious new Downs pavilion.
