A Tight Finish

Driving through a cloudburst to reach Blackheath everyone feared the worse but the ground was miraculously dry and play began on time. Some excellent bowling reduced Blackheath to 66-4 and ven at 126-5 looked to be heading for a modest total however Mike Mahoney played a powerful innings of 132 with only one chance to help take them to 264-7 before declaring after 40 overs. Mahoney hit the Hon Sec for 30 in one over after that drop and a wild throw in allowed him back on strike.

Nomads lost a couple of early wickets before Lascelles and Wooderson took the score to 72 whereupon Lascelles was controversially run out for 39. Kumal Seth was out almoct immediately leaving Nomads on 72-4. Then ‘Woody’ and young Ari Richardson put on 141 before Richardson was caught off Mahoney for 57. Two more quick wickets fell before a stand of 23 runs took the score to 246 with an over to go.Woody hit the 1st & 3rd balls for huge sixes leaving 7 to win off 3 balls.

However he could only locate the fielders thereafter resulting in 5 more runs and a sacrificial runout. We were just 3 short off 39 overs and Woody was unbeaten on 130*. For Nomads Andrew Weekes,Orlando Peters and Ari Richardson made their debut for Nomads.
