Kensington coast to victory
A generous declaration, a shortage of bowlers and an elderly fielding eleven all contributed to Kensington's comfortable win over Nomads at Ascot Park's fine cricket ground. Dropped catches and a missed stumping did not help Nomads' cause either.
Put in to bat Nomads saw Kie Farrell in fine form playing some sumptuous cover drives, Rupert Style in aggressive good form and skipper Brockton also notching a steady fifty. However at a crucial period some tight bowling from Amit Shanker and Wes Johnson saw the the momentum of the Nomads innings stall compounded by the quick loss of four wickets. Veterans Bill Johnson and Ross Ormiston had added some 28 when the skipper declared. His decision perhaps influenced by Kensington's batting failures in recent years. However this was a strong and deep batting line up and the pitch was an excellent one for batting.
Following a good tea Jai Singh and Matt Sydall set off at pace taking particular advantage of Andy Smith who struggled to find his usual accuracy and surviving a couple of chances off Sajjad Shawl who was unlucky to remain wicket less in his opening spell. Indeed Syddall was also dropped off Smith as well when 40. The openers had put on 136 at a run a ball when Chris Page took a well struck caught and bowled return from Jai Singh.
Last year Kensington committed suicide to Chris Page's slows but not this time as his figures reveal. Top scoring Kamrul Hasan did succumb but to Bill Johnson well caught in the deep by Jeremy Lascelles,136-2. Amit Shanker had scored an unbeaten ton for Nomads against Kensington in 2010 and he now joined Matt Syddall. The two added 67 and it was only the belated return of Sajjad Shawl now off his short run who checked the Kensington batsmen in their tracks.
Matt Syddall completed a fine century before snicking Shawl to Danny Buckland behind the stumps,204-3. Wajid Tahir joined Amit Shanker and not without blemishes these two added 53 runs to bring Kensington a comfortable win with 4.2 overs still to go.
Amit Shanker finished on 50 not out, a well composed innings and Wajid Tahir a swashbuckling 28 off 17 balls. Amit Shanker has now scored a century for Nomads in this match and scores of 60 not out and 50 not out for Kensington against Nomads.
It was unfortunate that Nomads were a bowler light as Skipper Brockton damaged his ankle while batting and the absence of young Jack Massey, injured the day before, did not help the efficacy of Nomads' fielding.
Kensington skipper Saurav Sen awarded Rupert Styles with a bottle of Johnny Walker Gold Label as Nomads Man of the Match and Nomads' Skipper awarded Matt Sydall with a Cobra Special as Kensington's Man of the Match.
The Queen's Head pub in Wing was closed so Nomads together with Jai Singh and Matt Sydall repaired the Cock Inn to complete a good day's cricket with several libations including a jug from centurion Matt who informed us he was once a Theology student and came from Bolton!
