Nomads squander decent start
O nce again Nomads were unnecessarily short as a result of late withdrawals and so fielded with 9 throughout. However the weather held off despite the earlier showers.
Nomads lost the toss and were invited to field. Charlton Lamb bowled beautifully while Charles Fellows-Smith struggled to find his usual accuracy at first. This was an opening attack combining 114 years between them
After a lot of playing and missing both openers fell to Lamb who may well have taken another before being replaced after 11 overs. Proctor in particular started hesitantly but both he and young Drake P took a liking to Blumberg’s bowling as well as Martin and Mann and both reached fifties. At the other end Fellows-Smith had recovered his composure and bowled tightly throughout, determined to take a wicket and not go for a century. He nearly did, 1-97 off 23.
East Horsley declared at 215-4 off 46 overs which set Nomads ta very reasonable target of circa 5 runs per over. Andy Hill and Jeremy Lascelles started confidently and had reached 72 off 14 whereupon Hill lost patience with the accurate bowling of Drake T and shortly after Lascelles did much the same with Brown, the off spinner, though Lascelles had less vertical flight than Hill’s cloud threatening aberration..Nomads now collapsed rather carelessly in view of the fact that we were only 9, losing 4 wickets for a mere 7.
Fellows-Smith put up stout resistance with de Bruin who had watched helpless while this mayhem was going on and these two added 21. With nearly 5 overs to go Blumberg joined de Bruin and the game was inevitably drawn leaving a bemuse d de Bruin on 30*.
This was a disappointing result in that most wickets were carelessly thrown away, a disease which was to carry over to the next day. The tea was good and the young tea ladies delightful. The trees looked magnificent and the Fulllers Beer was excellent after the match, a splendid location to play cricket. Pity about our performance.
Our hosts on their website described this match as "A boring boring draw"
Rumour has it that C F-S doctored the scorebook to avoid his century!
