Great Park Youth prevail over Veteran Nomads
Nomads visited Windsor Great Park with a veteran eleven of great experience and, in past decades, considerable quality but were found wanting on the day by the predominantly young local side.
Nomads won the toss and elected to bat first primarily because several Nomads were late. Jeremy Lascelles aand Jamie Lane made steady progress on a poor pitch reaching 35 before Lascelles miscued a lusty drive and was caught.Jamie Lane followed at the same score with a similar shot. Simon Israel after playing a deft cut for two also fell to a miscued drive and was caught. Saurabh Wahi defending stoutly was deceived by a ball that bounced viciously and was caught and bowled. Nomads had lost four wickets for 3 runs.
Andrew Smith and Bill Johnson batted carefully and seemed to be settling well when Bill was bowled,59-5. That Nomads reached any total of consequence was due to the skipper Ross Ormiston who topped scored with 36. Unfortunately Ross called Andrew Smith for a sharp single and he was run out by a direct hit from WGP skipper Ed Lazaraczuk. Ross himself succumbed to a big hit which found the fielder at long on.Chris Page hit some lusty blows to add 30 precious runs with Neil Senn. Enzo Nicoli was run out in the last over. Nomads finished 9 down on 149.
After a fine tea Nomads opened with two slow bowlers Andrew Smith and Bill Johnson and soon WGP were 23-3, one each to the bowlers and the other a run out. Hill should have been caught first ball off Andrew Smith but the President dropped the chance. This was unfortunate as the two young batsmen then scampered singles, twos and threes as they judged rightly that Nomads were mostly slow in the field. Hill and Lazaraczul added 53 valuable runs before both holed out to Andrew Smith by way of two catches taken by Ross Ormiston. On another day Smith may well have taken 5 or 6 as he frequently beat the bat and had other chances missed.
Christian Jones who had earlier bowled a mean spell was joined by the mature Mark Care and this two batted with great gusto against Ormiston and Page. Some mighty slogs from Jones together with swift running between the wickets and a series of Nomads' dropped catches and fumbles in the deep saw the stand double the score and win the match with 11.3 overs to go.
The fielders on the far boundary did have problems with the sun, thankfully the club skipper was not playing otherwise he would have torn out his remaining hair in exasperation! A couple of catches taken may have transformed this match but credit to the young batsmen for the determination with which they attacked their target.
Nomads enjoyed a good number of drinks afterwards on what had been a very fine afternoon though with a chill breeze.
Mr and Mrs Brian Wilson delivered some Dukes balls and stayed for some lunch. Tony Ford made an unexpected entry and umpired for a while and stayed for tea.
Two of our tourists to Rome in April made their UK Nomads debut, Simon Israel and Enzo Nicoli and, of course, another Rome Tourist Mrs Heather Nicoli was a welcome spectator. Hopefully their next appearances will find a better balanced and very successful Nomads eleven.
For the record the series of matches with WGP is now two all.
