Experience wins over youthful exuberance two years in a row at Haileybury.

Another memorable and thoroughly enjoyable day at Haileybury,where Nomads ran out winners by 6 wickets with some 11 overs of the 20 still remaining. Once again, the sides assembled for an 11am start, this time under cloudy skies compared to the near 30 degrees and baking hot sun from May 2018. Similarities in terms of the XIs selected, Nomads average age 49, Haileybury 24 (with not one player over the age of 30). Fortunately Haileybury speedster Ed Neale was not in the home side ranks as he had been picked up by Derbyshire and was playing his first season of county cricket.

Haileybury won the toss (negotiated) and elected to bat. The pitch looked to offer some assistance to the seamers and Nomads had thre strong new ball bowlers in their ranks in Desai, Al-Darraji and Shawl, as well as spin from 'Chinaman' Ash Arora & flighted filth from Professor Page. However, the Haileybury openers progressed the score to 50-0 before Desai trapped Brooking LBW. Howe, Carter and Reid all fell in relatively quick succession (Shawl taking two quick wickets, one from his first ball via Carter's inside edge) leaving the home side placed on 74-4. Opener Salt was proving the lynchpin of the innings, but he drove loosely to Brockton at cover to be taken for a well made 45. Balforth (despite a bat that sounded as dead as Pagey’s 25 year old Newbury) was digging in at the other end, and at lunch Nomads were certainly on top, Haileybury 6 down for 121. One of the highlights was Ash Arora's one handed catch off his own bowling just before the lunch break.

As usual the Nomads were treated to a fantastic spread for lunch,which lasted fittingly for an hour. Nomads consumed a considerable amount of wine (generously provided by Vic Kandampully and Chris Page), Haileybury abstained! Nomads re-took the field looking to take early wickets and an Ash Arora's quicker ball swiftly accounted for school PE master Payne-Cook for a well made 25. Nomads were now into the tail but despite taking a wicket Professor Page was not at his best and was being milked at a run a ball. Concern was that on a wicket that definitely hadsomething in it for the bowlers a score of over 200 maybe tricky to chase.

Page was replaced by Al-Darraji and Shawl replaced Arora who had bowled well for his 2-34 from 9 accurate overs. Despite some resistance from Balmforth (45), well taken in the deep by Desai, and Woodburn, dismissed by Shawl to end the innings on 192 after 45 overs. Al-Darraji and Shawl sharing 6 of the wickets to fall. Nomads would have in the region of 59 overs to chase this total which the Nomads brains trust considered to be about par.

Nomads skipper Brockton and burly Blackheath top orderbatter Kandampully opened the innings, the familiar figure of Sam Boothby(Harpenden CC) taking the new ball for the Hermits. As we saw last year Boothby isn’t adverse todishing out some “chin music” and he did sent down some bumpers, mainly to the helmetless Brockton. The Nomads skipper responded in kind to get off the mark with a pull over mid wicket and despite Kandampully being shelled at mid-off the two Nomads batters looked in relative control. Tea taken with Nomads 77-0 from 18 overs.

A quick cuppa and a bit of cake, Nomads took the field and Boothby swiftly removing Brockton, bounced out and taken at square leg. Kensington Stalwart Jai Singh entered at 3, but was soon bowled by offie Carter who was extracting some turn from the wicket. Nomads then lost 2 more quick wickets for the additional of just 1 run, Kandampully (47, top score in the match) who had batted so well miss-timed a lofted drive and the steepling catch was claimed by Brooking moving back from mid-on to claim the ball comfortably. Nomads from 82-0 were now 114-5, with Wakefield perishing for a duck. 

However, with time on their side and the pair of Desai and Ormiston at the crease (loads of batting to come, Al-Darraji, Arora, Shawl etc)the visitors were still in the box seat.

 In a display of assured batting, classy footwork and somel usty blows the pair of Ormiston and Desai knocked off the remaining 80 oddruns with no alarm, and in quick time. Ormiston looking every bit the part onhis way to 39* while Desai (37*) was happy to take the aerial route on occasionsto keep the scoreboard moving at a good rate. The game was won with an elegant clip off the pads from Ormiston off the bowling of the returning Woodburn, who although wicketless bowled accurately swinging the ball away from the right-hander prodigiously.

Nomads winners by 6 wickets in a well fought contest where the spirit of cricket was certainly observed. Both sides shared a few cold beers after the game, and a tasty BBQ was generously laid on by some of the older Hermits, the Nomads getting suck into a banger or two! Blummers suggested a nearby pub, which most of the side retired to and discussed the goings on of the day and much more. Pagey had appeared to cheer up slightly after his shorter than usual spell of bowling “all this way for only six bloody overs”,he was heard to say on more than one occasion.
