Sajjad sees Nomads home with mighty blows after taking fifer

The Eton College Cricket Pavilion

Nomads won an entertaining encounter at the fine setting of Upper Ground on Sunday against a youngEton Ramblers XI whose oldest player was 32 with therest of the team all being in their mid/late 20's. Fortunately the clouds and rain that were forecast stayed away for the most part enabling a full day's cricket to be played. Eton skipper Hugh Walters won the toss and elected to bat on what looked like a rock hard batting surface. Plenty of runs to be scored, or so we thought. Stu Reeve and Sajjad Shawl took the new cherry for the Nomads and Reeve should have been rewarded with his first delivery as Stobbs was dropped at first slip by his new ball partner Shawl.

This seemed to spur on Shawl who tore in and in tandem with Reeve took two wickets a-piece to reduce the Ramblers to the perilous position of 65-4 after 15 overs. Reeve(2-40)was replaced by ex-Durham CCC cricketer Bill Johnson and apart from a generous loosener he bowled an immaculate line and length returning impressive figures of 2-30 from 10 overs. Ramblers were on the rack as the 1pm bell rung for lunch and Shawl had taken a well deserved 4 wicket haul, one courtesy of very sharp catch from Andrew Smith at gully. Nomads fielding had been excellent and although the ball seemed to follow Charlie Peerless he was outstanding in the field during the pre-lunch session, as was Vince Gavin. After a sumptuous lunch, including delicious chilli-con-carnie and waist busting profiteroles Nomads took the field looking to ram home their early advantage.

Andrew Smith was immediately into his stride knocking back the middle pole of Walters with the 2nd ball after lunch, the bemused batsman stood his ground for what seemed an eternity, bamboozled by the guile of Smith! Debutant and ex-Wellington/ Central Districts cricketer Ross Ormiston replaced Johnson and immediately took a wicket with his flighted leg-spin. However Eton then staged something of a comeback and no10 Philips was chancing his arm with good effect and when Shawl returned to clean up the tail and rightfully claim his 5th wicket of the innings Eton had managed to scramble to 177 all out from 42 overs. Shawl impressive with 5-42 from 15 accurate overs. Eton Ramblers's last three wickets added 57.

Skipper Tom Brockton and West Herts cricketer Kie Farrell opened the innings for Nomads and put on 40 in good time until Brockton was LBW for 16. Charlie Peerless came and went in the blink of an eye for a 2nd ball nought but experienced batsman Johnson forged a substantial partnership with Farrell until the former was unlucky to be strangled down the legside for a fluently made 29 on the stroke of tea. The clouds became black and ominous but only light drizzle resulted.

Nomads were 92-3 at tea and well placed with Farrell unbeaten on 37. After the tea break and the umpire being rescued from his changing room where he had somewhat amusingly managed to lock himself in Nomads lost the wickets of Farrell for 48, well taken by Phillips after a drive had been aimed back at him and Smith for just 9, unfortunate to pick out the lone scout on the cover boundary. Stuart Reeve was then also victim of the umpires finger with just a solitary run to his name.

The game was in the balance, but debutant Ormiston (whose highest first class score is 179) looked every bit the class player timing the ball with consummate ease. He found a willing partner in the shape of 'keeper Keith Alexander and the two got Nomads past the 150 mark with a series of well timed strokes. Alexander smote a mighty 6 over mid wicket but was then unfortunately caught attempting a similar stroke.

Ormiston after looking so comfortable was yorked by the returning Walters so it was left to Vince Gavin and Sajjad Shawl to get Nomads over the line. Shawl with a cameo 19 not out including 2 boundary 4's and a massive six into the practice nets to finish the game in fine style and with 11 overs of the 20 remaining. Nomads reached their target for the loss of 8 wickets in what was a closely fought and very entertaining match. Victorious, Nomads retired to the local watering hole in Datchet where there was no argument who the 'man of the match' was..... Sajjad Shawl (also first to the bar to get a round in).
