Brockers 8 wickets gives Nomads unlikely win

Nomads snatched victory from the jaws of a certain defeat on Sunday at the Duke of Buckingham’s pretty ground in Oxford. As per usual the Nomads XI assembled well in advance of the start time only to find the pavilion locked and no one else in sight. The Middleton Stoney players eventually arrived and the game commenced some 20 minutes late.

Skipper for the day Simon Collins won the toss and gleefully decided to bat. The track was slow, the outfield was slower and runs were incredibly hard to come by. Kie Farrell was cleaned up early on in the piece by the impressive young seamer Cranston and Doc Bell was soon to follow for 14 after spooning an attempted lofted drive to mid on. Tom Brockton and Andrew Smith tried to rebuild the innings but in the face of some energetic fielding the run rate was pretty dire.

Brockton had his off stump pegged back for 28 with a delivery that looked to keep pretty low and Smith followed in identical fashion to Bell. Debutant Marcus Budgen (with half of his family in attendance) was caught behind and then the home umpire seemed to get an itchy trigger finger sending Charlie Peerless and Danny Buckland on their way, both for very contentious LBW decisions. Nomads were now on the rack, but Mike Plant played a steady hand batting watchfully and putting the bad ball away. The only partnerships of significance came late in the innings with Plant forging time in the middle with youngster Harry Bell and President Michael Blumberg. It took these two partnerships to get Nomads up and over the 100 mark, but a score of 118 was surely not enough.

The highlight of the day was most certainly the sumptuous spread laid on for lunch. Reminiscent of a scene from the Darling Buds of May, Perfek!

With full bellies and full confidence the Nomads took the field knowing they would have to be at their absolute best to restrict Middleton Stoney. An early breakthrough was certainly needed and Harry Bell was equal to the task, finding the edge of Thompson’s bat and Buckland did the rest flinging himself at full stretch in-front of Blumberg at 1stslip. However, the score progressed without further incident to 39-1 after 12 overs, and Simon Collins clearly thought a change was needed.

Brockers was thrust into action and immediately found some swing accounting for Tommy House with just his 2ndball. Buckland again the beneficiary behind the stumps. Jackson and Clarke added over 30 for the 3rdwicket and Nomads were again behind the 8 ball. Brockton had not taken a wicket since his 2ndball strike and at the other end Andrew Smith was proving accurate, but un-penetrative. It was then the game changed, Brockton cleaned up Clarke, swiftly followed by the prize wicket of opener Jackson, also bowled. The fate of the home side rested with skipper Springer, but when he found the safe hands of Mike Plant the home side subsided and further wickets were lost, Simpson & Lee also falling to Brockton’s in-swingers.

With an improbable victory in their sights Brockton yorked Cranston and Smith supplied the coup de grasse by dismissing Moore (caught by Brockton) to win the game. Amazingly Nomads had bowled out the hosts for just 109 to give them a slender 9 run victory. The tail-end partnerships between Plant, Blumberg and Bell had proved vital & Brockton had returned career best figures of 8-34 from 10 overs.

Celebratory drinks flowed as Middleton Stoney laid on their usual post match BBQ. Many of the Nomads leaving the pretty ground in Oxford well after dark.

The Middleton Stoney scribe Tim Cranston describes the match thus
