David Leng defeats Nomads
Undoubtedly Follies skipper David Leng was Man of the Match and a half and would also have claimed the late Brian Johnston's Magic Moment too!. First he blasted 74* to lift Follies score from respectable to a challenging total with 94 runs off the last 10 overs, then he made a miraculous catch to remove Joe Ireland on 24 when Joe threatened to make mince meat of Follies bowling and to cap it all he then bowled at first change eight miserly overs for 13 runs plus a wicket. Remove his figures and the game's overall run rate was 6 per over(FFOS 6.1,N 5.9).
Follies batted first and by way of some robust shots and a lot of extras (a combination of some wayward seam bowling and a very part time 'keeper had reached 149-6 by the 30th over a trifle fortuitously. Then Leng smashed Lamb,Wakers and the returning openers for 74 unbeaten runs. Quite why Joe Ireland 5-2-19-2 was not re-introduced remains a mystery!
Nomads reply started badly as Wakers dragged a wide ball onto his stumps but Ireland and Lascelles (who went on score 50) maintained a respectable rate. Then Ireland was brilliantly caught at deepish mid on diving full length to a fearsomely smacked back foot shot and Nathan Lamb played round another straight ball from Leng,67-3.
Enter Richard Woolhouse with almost his first shot a missed drive obviously aimed at Chiddingfold Village a few miles away announced his intent. Subsequently he made contact to such good effect he had hit 61 before driving straight to deepish mid off.
With his departure Nomads innings which at 32 overs was ahead of Follies at the same point then collapsed (167-5 to 177-9) so that despite a huge six from young Max Keble-White the last pair of Collins and Blumberg had the task of scoring 67 runs off 3.2 overs. They hit 24 off the first 14 balls before the mathematical conundrum of how to score 43 off the last over so befuddled Simon Collins that he hit the first ball meekly to the grateful bowler Brockwell who thus finished with 7.1-0-51-1.
The weather was decidedly unpleasant and we were lucky to get a game in at all but a cracking one none the less.
Many thanks FFOS
