Nomads short of Bowlers fail to quench Sherfield challenge
Nomads lost in a close encounter on Sunday June 4th to a strong Sherfield on Loddon side featuring three current Nomads (messers Wilson, Gibson and Dummer). Nomads won the toss elected to bat first on a wicket which had been subjected to a little over night rain and Richard Mackey was victim of some exaggerated seam movement as he was bowled neck and crop in the 1st over by veteran seamer Digby.
Ormiston and Brown then forged a a partnership of just over 80 in good time to restore some balance, but the former was trapped for a run a ball 43 by what can only be described as a “gazunder” from youngster Faulkner. OllySmith was then undone by one that stopped on him and the Nomads innings had lost momentum.
Skipper Brockton joined Brown and put on a 74 run partnership to get Nomads up and over the 150 Mark. Brown reached his half century but Brockton snicked behind off Grant (10-2-36-4) who was the pick of the Sherfield bowlers when looking wellset. Brown was then cleaned up by Grant's quicker ball and the innings subsided a little despite some fireworks from Hugo Morris and a composed 19* from Andy Smith. The rain then came and Nomads declared on a credible 221-8 from a little shy off 44 overs.
A generous spread for tea (and plenty of cold beer) welcomed both sides, thank you to Mrs Smith for her hard work and efforts. Nomads took the field and debutant Mike Cole took the new ball. He did dismiss Grant, Smith courtesy of a smart catch from Mike Plant but then went in the back after 2 overs and was not able to bowl again. Nomads stocks were not exactly overflowing with options, Ormiston, Plant and Brockton all unable to bowl due to persistent rotator cuff and Achilles injuries respectively.
Andy Smith was in fine form with the ball and his mammoth 17 overspell yielded a deserved 4 wicket haul. However Chris Page was flogged out of the attack and despite taking 2 wickets Oliver Croom-Johnson was perhaps not quite at his best. However, he did dismiss the burly Scotsman Jamie Riddle who had smashed 50 in just 28 balls and looked to be taking the game away from the Nomads as well as the prize scalp of Bromley cricketer Rob Dummer.
Olly Smith ran in with gusto but the occasional short ball was dispatched by the Dummer Brothers. The game was in the balance and Wilson was LBW to Andy Smith with just 7 needed. Clark (Snr) joined skipper Dummer with only young Clark (jnr ) to come. Scampered singles a plenty and Nomads age in the field became apparent. The match was won with just 2 balls remaining as Ross Ormiston was unable to stop a quick single to backward point. Sherfield onLoddon victorious by 2 wickets in a closely fought contest.
Kie Farrell was among the interested spectators alongside Jane MacKey. The sides socialised for quite some time at the Four Horseshoes in the village & the victorious captain Steve Dummer was presented with the Michael Blumberg Tankard for safe keeping until the sides meet again in 2018. We thank Sherfield on Loddon for their hospitality and a super day at their pretty ground in rural Hampshire.
