Nomads won a see-saw encounter vs Putney CC on Putney Heath on Sunday, who had kindly replaced Marlow CC at the 11th hour when they were amazingly unable to field a side. Tom Brockton won the toss and in glorious conditions unsurprisingly elected to bat first. Eventually a 45 over game was agreed and David Steele and Charlie Peerless opened up for the visitors.

The new ball bowlers looked impressive, one reminiscent of Sussex stalwart Robin Martin-Jenkins the other more in the guise of South African swing bowler Merrick Pringle. Steele was dismissed for 0 courtesy of a sharp catch at short cover. Former Pakistan U19 Saj Ayub and Peerless fought gamefully against the strong bowling unit but both were dismissed when looking set, Peerless drilling a drive to point for 26 and Ayub scooping a pull shot to be easily taken at mid-wicket.

Andy Hill and Andrew Smith looked to get Nomads back on track, but just as they looked ready to launch an assault both were cut down in their prime, Hill snicked off and Smith played a woeful heave to leg to be clean bowled. Nomads now in all sorts of trouble at 88-5 when drinks were taken after 22 overs.

Tom Brockton and Barnes man Chris Chambers entered the arena and began to rebuild the innings, buoyed by some chirping encouragement from the Putney CC captain the pair added a substantial total to get Nomads up and over the 175 mark and Brockton past 50. The Putney CC leg-spinner was taking some punishment after an impressive first couple of overs, although he did exact a modicum of revenge by bowling Chambers for 39 with his quicker ball.

Brockton was now in full flow and in partnership with Barnes CC’s Jarod Schmidt added a further 50 runs to the cause. From the depths of 88-5 Nomads were now racing past 250. Schmidt was dismissed for 23 in the attempt of more quick runs as was Sajjad Shawl (off the final ball of the 45th over) but Brockton was unbeaten on 90 and Nomads had posted 265-8. Putney CC would have to score at almost a run a ball to overhaul this total.

After an enjoyable tea Andrew Smith and Sajjad Shawl took the new cherry for the Nomads and both looked in fine form, Shawl with bustling pace and Smith full of guile a deception. Smith took the first three wickets to fall (two courtesy of fine catches from his son Ben at mid-off) and bowled his 9 overs straight through. Shawl was exceptional, beating the bat on numerous occasions.

Nomads reduced the Putney batting order to tatters, with the introduction of David Steele and some quick work from reluctant keeper Andy Hill who swooped to return to the ball to Steele to complete a run out (diamond duck for the unfortunate batsman). With Putney now 5 down and needing almost 200 to win Ben Smith was introduced to the attack, but he bowled poorly and went for 10 an over from his 3 completed overs. Jarod Schmidt was brought into the attack and his extra pace yielded 3 wickets for 18 runs in 6 overs as Putney looked to counter attack. Chris Chambers claimed his maiden nomads wicket with some medium pace and Sajjad Shawl returned to finish the game in fine style clean bowling the now rather quiet Putney CC Captain. Putney 198 all out and Nomads victorious by the convincing margin of 67 runs.
