Sunday June 28th v Weybridge Vandals CC

Putney could not raise a side so we went to the Club Cricket Conference Fixtures Bureau and secured a match with Chobham CC. However Chobham then failed to raise a side so via the CCC we arranged a match with Weybridge Vandals CC.

Shawl & Smith too hot to handle in massive Nomads victory

The Nomads juggernaut rolled steadily onward on Sunday as Weybridge Vandals CC were dispatched by the margin of 248 runs (yes 248 runs!) on their Presidents Day.

Nomads batted first on a slightly odd looking pitch that looked to give some assistance to the seamers and under cloudy skies Farrell and Wakefield opened up for the visitors. Farrell was to depart early in the piece after three crunching boundaries chipped a toed cut shot to cover where Chapman pouched the chance.

Ormiston and Wakefield then forged an 86 run partnership in good time, the two former pro's milking the bowling and finding the gaps on a regular basis. Ormiston departed for a classy 38 bowled by the veteran Hammond as he attempted an ambitious late cut. So Brockton joined Wakefield who had just registered his first Nomads 50 since his return from Uzbekistan.

Wakefield was then dismissed for 64 which brought young speedster Robbie Blackburn to the crease and in tandem with Brockton added a further 124 in just 15 overs with both players weighing in with unbeaten half centuries. Blackburn was given a life when on 0, a dropped caught and bowled and Brockton was shelled at mid wicket when on 60. However, the pairs' partnership allowed Nomads to declare on 271-3 from just 37 overs. Nomads would bowl in the region of 50 overs back at the Vandals.

After a cracking Presidents Day tea Shawl tore in with the new ball accounting for the hapless Vandals opener with a big nip-backer which clipped the top of the off stump. Shawl took two further wickets (also bowled) to leave the home side reeling at 6-3 from 5 overs. At the other end Andrew Smith was extracting some variable bounce from the wicket and struck courtesy of a Shawl catch and then Shawl produced a vicious delivery which was snaffled by Wakefield at 3rd slip. Weybridge Vandals on the rack at 18-6 and their plight was not assisted by Andrew Smith taking a further two wickets, one courtesy of a stunning catch by Danny Buckland who was outstanding behind the stumps in his first Nomads game of the season.

Shawl took his 5th wicket (bowled again) and despite a modicum of resistance from the Vandals captain Adrian Waldock who bravely withstood the barrage from Shawl the home side were eventually dismissed for just 23 in 18 overs. Smith also taking 5 wickets. Shawl 5-7, Smith 5-12, a 248 win for Nomads, possibly their biggest ever margin of victory.

This was in reality a dreadful mismatch!

Andrew Smith & Sajjad Shawl Fivefers both !

After such an early finish the Nomads retired to the bar, jugs of beer from our heroes with the ball, Smith & Shawl and a lavish Braai was laid on to further celebrate what had been a memorable Presidents Day. Our thanks to Weybridge Vandals for their hospitality and for fulfilling the conference fixture at short notice. We look forward to returning to their attractive ground in Walton-on-Thames surrounded by the River Thames next season to play a stronger Vandals XI.
