Returning Al-Darraji inspires Nomads to another victory

Nomads travelled to play Southlands CC by London Colney, Hertfordshire as Beaconsfield had reneged on the ground booking by Gaieties so a speedily arranged Conference fixture was needed. A damp and very green wicket awaited the Nomads who elected to bat first upon winning the toss, Farrell and skipper Brockton opening the innings. Southlands medium pace attack of Daniel-Paul and Katzel was "orthodox" in style and the score progressed to 73 with no alarms.

Brockton was dismissed for 35, Goldman the successful bowler and Al-Darraji joined Farrell who was motoring towards a half century. Al-Darraji was then dismissed in comical circumstances, hitting his own wicket attempting a late cut. However, at drinks Nomads were well poised at 112-2. Against a somewhat lackluster bowling attack Farrell did the decent thing, got 60 and then got out, although tall seamer Stein bowled well for the home side extracting some uneven bounce from the wicket.

Nomads then lost their way in quite dramatic fashion and in the face of some enthusiastic fielding collapsed with Liversidge, Wakefield, Budgen (jnr), Kandampully & Page all dismissed cheaply. Ross Ormiston was playing the anchor role and in tandem with Budgen (snr) got Nomads up to and over 200 with a series of pull shots. Their partnership was worth almost 50 when Budgen was run out going for a a risky 2nd run and President Blumberg joined Ormiston who was then promptly bowled the very next ball for a boundary laden 42. From 73-0 and 112-2 Nomads had faltered a little but 219-10 was indeed a favourable score on such a turgid wicket.

After a sandwich and a cuppa Al-Darraji and Brockton took the new ball for the Nomads and although both players swung the ball, snicks and cross batted swipes evaded the fielders and Southlands were off to something of a flier. Changes in the bowling offered immediate rewards with experienced hands Ormiston and Page putting a halt on the run rate, and picking up deserved wickets. Both players bowled their 8 overs straight through, a testament to their accuracy though Durban and Fink struck severable boundaries including one huge six off Page..

Changes in the bowling brought no rest-bite for the home side with Marcus Budgen(swapping keeeping duties with with Victor Kandampully) and a rejuvenated Al-Darraji tearing through the middle and lower order. Al-Darraji on a hatrick at one point and Budgen bowling the delivery of the day which pitched on leg and clipped the top of off. Southlands were now effectively out of the game, Brockton came back on to clean up the home skipper, Clive Hart and Budgen finished the game trapping Goldman palpably LBW leaving DanielPaul the undefeated batsman. Southlands 148 all out with 5 overs of the allotted 40 remaining.

With no bar at Southlands CC the opposition provided some canned beer and cider after which Nomads retired to a suitably agreeable watering hole recommended by local resident Al-Darraji to cogitate further after an interesting days cricket. Chris Page was seen to be enjoying the local ale long into the evening.
