Stu Reeve hits ton but Nomads bowlers win the game

Nomads got back to winning ways and ran out victors by 75 runs in an entertaining encounter at the pretty setting of Follies Farm in the scenic village of Chiddingfold. Boasting a strong XI, featuring ex-1st class cricketers Saj Ayub and Ross Ormiston as well as pace ace Robbie Blackburn and the hat-trick hero from last seasons fixture Sajjad Shawl it was no surprise that Tom Brockton won the toss and elected to bat. No David Leng for Follies Farm, so they were without usual their skipper and talisman for this encounter.

Stu Reeve and Saj Ayub opened up for the Nomads and their opening stand was both impressive and assertive. An opening partnership of 106 in 24 overs and Stuart Reeve to a well deserved 50. Ayub was unfortunate to pick out the lone fielder at mid-wicket for 45, but Ross Ormiston and Reeve then put together their own stand of 50 in just 11 overs and once Ormiston was on his way for a classy 26 Reeve went into overdrive with consecutive boundaries off the returning Hicks to reach his maiden Nomads century. Peerless, Shawl and Lane perished in the attempt of additional quick runs (Sajjad has now failed to score a single run in 3 innings at Follies Farm totalling 6 balls faced). Reeve was eventually out in the penultimate over for a fantastic boundary laden 116 featuring 16 4’s and 2 maximums. Smith and Blackburn batted out the final few deliveries with few concerns and after 40 overs Nomads were well placed with 215 on the board. On a relatively slow wicket and lush outfield this would be a daunting chase for the Follies batsmen.

After the usual sumptuous tea Blackburn and Shawl took the new cherry for the Nomads and in a blink of an eye the home side were 20-4. The new ball pair ripping through the top order with pace and guile. Three of the batsmen were bamboozled with slower balls and Shaw’s accurate Yorker accounted for the 4th. The standard was kept high by Andrew Smith who helped himself to 3 wickets with his accurate slow-medium bowling including Follies skipper Tebitt out caught and bowled. Follies were now in dire straits and a target of 215 was no more than a pipe-dream.

Chris Wilson turned his arm over as did golden Arm Charlie Peerless who took a wicket in his 6 over spell. Skipper Brockton knocked over the no10 (who looked like their best batsman) for 39 and then had occasional Nomad Charlie Dickens caught behind by Jamie Lane soon after to end the home sides resistance. Follies Farm all out for 140, well short of the target. An enjoyable and friendly match had come to an end with Nomads worthy victors.

With usual host Angelo Economou holidaying in Greece and not behind the bar a good number of the side retired to a near-by pub for a couple of beers and to toast Stuart Reeve’s maiden Nomads century. A busy week of cricket follows with fixtures at Turville Park, Beddington and Middleton Stoney, please pass on your availability to Michael Blumberg.
