Ten Nomads fall short at Headley despite Ormiston onslaught
The Nomads XI (or 10 in this case) made the trip to the pretty surrey village of Headley to play our old friends Headley Cricket Club,a fixture that has been in the calendar since the 1960s. Unusually this had been a tricky game to match manage, with several drop outs during the week & a last minute cryoff with Mark Firth going down with a bout of food poisoning from a dodgy Chinese the night before. So Nomads notat full strength, in terms of the usual personnel or physical numbers.
Headley Skipper Dickinson won the toss and elected to bat on a wet deck that had been heavily rolled. Nomads had a somewhat threadbare bowling line up so the option of chasing seemed the best way of being successful. Page (he likes a newer ball) and Ralphs opened the bowling for Nomads. Pagey strangely opted to bowl with the short leg side boundary as the wind was In the right direction for his arm ball. Both toiled away gamefully, Ralphs bowling well to claim two wickets, Page one (Dickinson caught at long off, via a good catch from Ralphs after he had been launched for 6 the ball before).
Cowie was batting well at the other end and gained good support from Winslett, who we have previously seen wield the willow very effectively at Headley’s small ground. Ralphs took some tap in his final over, somewhat ruining his figures.Brockton and Ormiston looked to stem the flow of runs, Cowie out to a remarkable catch from veteran Nomad Jamie lane at cover & Brockton removed the youngster without scoring. Headley’s keeper was stonedead LBW first ball (not given), and he forged a rather one sided partnership with Winslett who was hitting the ball very hard to, and often over, theboundary. He reached his ton with a towering 6 off the curmudgeon Page and Headley then declared on 239-5 from 37overs. A generous declaration we thought, Nomads would get about 48 overs back to chase this total, but Headley would have ample time to bowl the Nomads out.Game on.
Tea was delicious and Mrs Waller’s chocolate cake was a calorific delight. A small crowd of pensioners had assembled to watch some cricket in the late afternoon sunshine as Brockton and Farrell started the reply for the Nomads, young Barton Jnr taking the new ball in tandem with the experienced left armer Grant Waller (always a friendly face at Headley CC). Farrell mis-timed a clip off his pads and was taken for 10, but Brockton and Ralphs started to build a watchful partnership of some 60 runs before a curious occurrence.
It was 5:30pm and Headley’s chairman Andy Pickering calledf or the start of the 20 overs, Brockton intervened stating had agreed 6:15pm to which Headley captain Dickinson reluctantly agreed was correct but said that was, in hindsight, now too late for some of his players. Quite a discussion was had, Brockton said he was retiring in protest, but Professor Page (who was umpiring) restored somecalm by offering a compromise to start the 20 overs at 5:50pm instead.
Brockton then hit the next two balls for 4 before snicking off from the third for 35 and could be heard chuntering as he walked back tothe sanctity of the away team dressing room. Jamie Lane joined Ralphs who was batting with assurance but Lane was cleaned up for 1 and this brought in the in-form Kiwi Ross Ormiston. He and Ralphs added over a hundred in quicktime, both players batting with confidence and no lack of skill on a wicket that was not easy to time the ball on. Both players registered 50s, Ormiston’s classy stroke play complimented by Ralphs’ scurrying between the wickets. The left and right hand combination worked well, meaning one was able to target the shorter boundary each over.
Changes in the bowling were made, clearly the pair had taken the game by the scruff of the neck, a once daunting chase now looked withinreach, but with 50 needed off the last 6 overs Ralphs was stumped (or was he caught behind?) for a well crafted 60 and Nomads lost some momentum. Kandampully was given a rather unenviable task of keeping up with a 10 an over rate from ball 1 and both he and Mackey perished in the quest for quick runs. Ormiston smoke a couple of massive 6’s, ending on 79* with David Pitlarge offering stoic support at the other end.
Nomads finishing after 41 overs 20 odd off the pace and 6down (effectively 7 as we only had 10 men). Conversations in the bar turned to what would have occurred with the extra 25 mins play, a successful Nomads run chase or perhaps Headley taking the final 3 wickets to win the game which they had performed so well in with bat,and in the field (Nomads dropping many catches, Headley players dropping noneand fielding well, stopping several well timed shots from Ormiston in particular).
So a draw the end result.
Sir Michael Pickard, President of Headley CC arrived to seethe conclusion of the match and to join both sides in a post-match drink. He was pleased we were playing “proper declaration cricket”.
Nomads retired to a quaint country pub in the village of Tadworth before making the trip back on the M25. We look forward to returning to Headley in 2020.
