Comedy Farce & Catastrophe
Nomads fielded probably the weakest side in its history against a strong, predominently young and competent, Queries eleven skippered by Nomad Sam Blake. On the day this team was furthered weakened by the late withdrawal of key players, Keith Alexander and Bill Johnson. The result was that Nomads took the field with but one fielder who could not run, a couple of others who could jog, several geriatrics and a bunch who could not field at all.
In the circumstances ancient Charlton Lamb's figures were remarkable and he was unlucky not have several wickets indeed centurion Garman was dropped on a duck by Blumberg at slip!
Nomads did take one wicket when Blumberg bowled Sloane beating him in the flight and the same bowler should have caught & bowled the centurion had he made any effort instead of staring at mid on who certainly was not going to try.
David Haywood retired exhausted not least from running so many threes to non running, non throwing, fielders as well as endless singles straight to a short mid on who seemed to think his function was to pick the ball up after the run was complete and smile at everyone.
After en edgy start Garman plundered the bowling hitting some mighty drives high for six especially three to take him to 99 off one over from the President.
Sam Blake declared early, well before tea, seeking victory as the weather had changed dramaticaly during the afternoon. A mighty hundred from former Dauntsey boy Nick Warde may have made things look a little better but he was bowled for 9. Indeed only Vince Gavin reached double figures as Nomads succumbed meekly to some decent but hardly threatening bowling. Ram Sisodia who dropped anchor as if determined to bat through the innings suddenly, quite out of character, committed suicide against the high lobbed hand grenades of Coupe and to finish off the complete farce M Sisodia ran himself out by miles calling for a third!
There was a sumptuous tea laid on which was much enjoyed and the locally brewed Wadsworth on tap much appreciated. A beautiful evening was passed on the Devizes Pavilion patio with much good banter before the last Nomads set off back to London. One can only apologise to Queries for bringing such a hopeless side in such contrast to the previous year.

Barry Aitken's Polite report
Sam Blake had managed to assemble a side that would in the end prove far too strong for the Nomads and winning the toss and batting first, the Queries powered their way to an easy victory. David Haywood and Ollie Sloane opened the batting, with Ollie making the running and getting to his 50 in 23 scoring shots. Talk of converting this to a century perhaps brought about a wild swing at a ball and he was bowled for 61. David, joined by Alex Garman, went on to make his own half century and then retired on 55. meanwhile Alex was in carefree and unfettered scoring mode, getting to his 50 in 23 scoring shots and his century in 39 scoring shots including five 6s. He carried his bat for 104 and the innings was declared at 3.15pm, after 32 overs, with 251 on the board.
Piers Foster opened the bowling from the pavilion end, and guest James Houlgrave took the second over. Both proved too good for the batsmen, Piers bowling the opener in the 5th over and taking two more wickets in his 6th over whilst James went wicketless but conceding just 18 runs in 7 overs. Piers finished with figures of 7 - 2 - 13 - 3 and James 7 - 0 - 18 - 0. Piers' brother Nick replaced him at the pavilion end and Ed Coupe came on at the other end to bowl his hand grenades - and after 5 overs from each of them, it was all over. Nick had the magnificent figures of 5.2 overs, 1 maiden taking 4 for 7 and Ed took 2 for 15 from his 5 overs.
The Foster brothers seemd to be working well as a pair! Piers took a fine catch at silly mid off when Nick was bowling and then Nick, hit smartly to the long on boundary chased the ball down himself, hurled the ball in to his brother to secure the final wicket run out. The Queries had won the match by 182 runs.
