Nomads Sink with Barely a Croak

Nomads put in their worst performance for some years against the Frogs on a beautiful sunny Sunday June 13th. Unfortunately depleted by a couple of key players on the one hand and left one short on the day on the other by someone very keen to play on Saturday evening this was still a hugely underwheming performance.

With players late Joe Ireland elected to bat on winning the toss on a slow perversely moist pitch. With a thin top order and a fragile middle this was a day for a solid careful long innings from someone or two. Instead we had a series of cameos as the score rattled along at over 5 an over while wickets fell to long hops and half volleys. A very creaky Andy Marshall at one end and a regularly over stepping William Twiston-Davies at the other (7 no balls) were hardly threatening.

At 18 Lascelles played a cover drive too early and skied a catch to extra cover. At 61 Andrew Smith who had hit several crisp boundaries then hit a long hop to point. The opening bowlers conceded 83 runs off 15 overs. They were followed by the much more accurate but hardly awe inspiring Keith Roger & Steve Walsh.

If ever there was an apposite moment for Russell Mann to repeat his Entrecasteaux performance, (28 off 27 overs in an 40 overs match) this was it but he was soon clean bowled by Walsh.

Paul Wakefield had arrived late and somewhat flustered by an Uzbekian detour and he now joined Joe Ireland who had played some splendid shots especially off the back foot. Paul with 3 centuries to his name for Nomads already this season needed to score a 4th at Epsom College and he started his innings cautiously hinting at serious intent. However facing Walsh Joe Ireland seeking to shake off the shackles of several dot balls miscued a cover drive which fell safely out of any fielders’ reach and then next ball attempting to clear the boundary with a straight drive missed and was perhaps unlucky to be adjudged lbw.

However having lost 3 wickets already there was a need to consolidate and build a partnership and time was of no concern. At 93-4 the innings was looking decidedly wobbly as we were now confirmed one man short. Disaster soon struck again as Wakers went to flick Walsh to leg but mistimed presenting a leading edge and so was gently caught & bowled. Simon Collins and Richard Brooke took us into lunch at 118-5.

Richard hit a couple of nice boundaries before being bowled by Walsh and Collins soon followed after two more fours.

After the innings the umpire apologised to Collins as apparently he hadn’t been bowled at all, the ball rebounding from Hugo Norman’s pads. Irritating for Simon but unlikely to change the course of the match. Daren Williams was shortly lbw for a duck which brought the Hon Sec to the wicket to join AvaisKhalid “much too late” in his opinion with the score 127-8. Consulting Avis he said “our first objective is to occupy the crease for an hour, with that achieved we may re-assess the situation” and Nomads history reveals a great many occasions when MB has done just that to the utter exasperation of the opposition bowlers who even changed to under-arm bowling in two matches long ago(allowed under the pre 2000 MCC Laws),such was their exasperation!

All was going quietly to plan when Abeed Janmohamed struggling to find some sort of length bowled a gentle full toss at Avis. Caught in two minds Avais tamely tapped it back to the bowler who had barely finished his loud apologies. Nomads were all out (10 men) for 140 in 36.5 overs, a total assisted by 22 extras including at least 12 no balls.

The skipper opted to open with Avais who bowls leg breaks but is short of practice and despite some good balls he was severely punished by the red faced Baker. Joe at the other end bowled an exemplary line and length and was unlucky not to have both batsmen out. Such was his control-7-2-19-0 that at 13 overs Frogs were on 59 whereas Nomads had been on 67 (but for 2).

Andy Smith and Williams replaced them and both bowled an opening maiden over. At 16 overs Frogs were 81 to Nomads 86 (but for 3 wickets). Andy was then hit for 29 off two overs bringing on Wakefield probably 20 overs too late. His bowled Phillips in his first over and produced sharp turn to beat Janmohamed’s bat in his second.

The ever reddening Baker now turned on the heat with Janmohammed and they hit 25 off the last two overs bowled to win the match by 9 wickets. Baker finished on 95 an innings not without blemish but full of huge boundary hits including 5 towering sixes.

The match was thus over before tea permitting soccer lovers on both sides to suffer the excitement and then despair of England‘s footballers’ performance in Lisbon. There was something reminiscent of the Nomads about England’s play in extra time but then, of course, they were also playing ‘The Frogs’.

Our friends the Frogs were founded the same year as ouselves.Several Frogs are also Nomads. This fixture is played at Epsom College,Epsom Surrey.
