Match Drawn as last pair hold out

Nomads travelled on Sunday to play Middleton Stoney at their attractive ground in the former estate of the Earl of Jersey, however the early “summer” rain had turned what was normally a batsman’s paradise into something of a slow/low pitch with an equally turgid outfield. Winning the toss and electing to bat first, skipper for the day Simon Collins sent out the pair of Keith Alexander and Tom Brockton to face the new ball. Alas, Alexander was well taken early by the diving Springer at cover, but Brockton and Andrew Smith added a partnership of just over 100 to get Nomads back on track.

The pair of Van De Kerkof and Simpson bowled impressive spells for the home side, both using their experience wisely on such a tricky wicket. Smith perished for a well crafted 49, and Sajjad Shawl and Charlie Peerless both departed in the vain quest for quick runs. It was not until Haider Kamal joined Brockton that the rate was really accelerated, the pair putting on 22 in 11 balls at the back-end of the Nomads innings. Brockton ended unbeaten on 80 and Kamal a quick fire 16 from just 8 balls.

On the face of things a total of 161 may look under-par, but with a slow outfield, stodgy wicket and an impressive attack on paper the general feeling was that this was equivalent to 225-230.

After another cracking tea from the home side Simon Collins led the Nomads to the field and entrusted the new ball to Tony Alderton and Karl Knoll. Both bowlers looked impressive in the early exchanges, Alderton beating the bat three times an over and seaming the ball both ways and It was Alderton who deservedly took the first wicket when the bucket hands of Shawl took a regulation catch at wide-gully.

Shawl himself replaced Alderton and his extra pace and bounce quickly accounted for Sugden, Green & Silverman and when Brockton knocked back opener Simpson’s off stump with a ball that appeared to keep a little low Middleton Stoney were in all sorts of trouble at 92-6. With overs running out Knoll was recalled to the attack and he started to work his way through the lower order of the Middleton Stoney batting line-up. With 3 overs left Nomads had the home side 9 down, but despite some intricate field placing from Collins the final wicket somehow alluded the visitors. Middleton Stoney finishing on 135-9.

The traditional post match BBQ was much enjoyed despite the persistent drizzle) took place and the teams looked forward to the 2013 encounter, hopefully in warmer conditions.
