Another thriller at Marlow Park

Nomads were involved in another nail biter at the idyllic setting of Marlow Park on Sunday. The early morning gloom lifted to reveal a sunny and pleasantly warm day, and with the Henley Regatta going on just down the road it made for something of a party atmosphere. Plus, Leigh (Brockton) and Susie (Morris) & guests had brought enough booze to sink the Bismark so the Nomads assembled to the chink chink of bubbles and G&T.

A declaration game was agreed on and Nomads won the toss and would bat at 1:15pm.  Brockton and Ralphs(Marlow Parks’ favourite son!) opened and put on 107 in a largely untroubled partnership.  There was a shout for a stumping, and a Bradley dropped catch (was Ralph’s obstructing the field?) but apart from that it was plain sailing. Brockton brought up his 50 with an all run 4 (yes all run 4) but was then stumped by Kyle Bradley for 54 in the 21st over as he gave Pete Stephens the charge.

Sajjad Shawl was bumped up the order but his stay was to bea short one as he was sent on his way by the eccentric Marlow Park umpire (Guy,sporting a rather amusing straw hat) for 13. Nomads now 129-2.  Lascelles joined Ralphs who was finding the going a little tougher vs the Marlow Park slow bowlers, Stephens and the familiar figure of Kim Barlow, son of Marlow Park President Mike Barlow.

Jeremy went on the offensive (no, your author has not been taking any illegal substances) dispatching Stephens over mid-on for back to back boundaries.  Nomads were now very much in the box seat, and changes in the bowling did not stem the flow of runs.  Ralphs was inching towards his first Nomads ton, but was cleaned up when on 82 and Lascelles remained unbeaten on 61, featuring 9 boundaries.  The partnership was worth 94 in 19 overs. Nomads had posted 223 in 43 overs, on a wicket that showed considerable improvement from 2018.

Nomads would bowl the same back at Marlow Park and after something of a makeshift tea took the field with Sajjad Shawl and debutant Will Consett.  Consett bowled nicely taking two wickets in his opening burst, one bowled and one via a good catch from Ormiston at 3rd slip. Unfortunately Shawl was off colour (not sure your author has written that for a long time) and was wayward in his length allowing Pete Stephens to free his hands on more than one occasion. Page was introduced along with his spin twin Mark Firth.  Firth bowled nicely, perhaps a little too flat, but Page was flogged almost from ball one.  Firth dismissed Singh (courtesy of a sharp catch from Hugo Morris at first slip) and this brought Nomad Kyle Bradley to the crease.

Bradley started brightly, full of hussle and bussle between the wickets, despite some goading from the Nomads fielders, and he tucked into a few loose ones from the Professor, however Pagey was to have the last laugh as he dismissed Bradley who tried to sweep Page, but comically only succeeded in sweeping the ball onto his stumps via his back leg.  Much mirth from the Nomads, but Bradley and Stephens had given Marlow Park something of a foothold. Pagey then repeated the dose and clean bowled Stephen who had batted well for his 77.  Pagey then trapped Hoggan LBW for 0, sweeping(don’t sweep Pagey) given by the MP umpire.

Nomads now had their foot on the MP throat, but no 9 Tahore was looking like he should have been at 3 or 4 (he is their best player Ormiston was heard to comment from the slip cordon). Consett was recalled, as was Shawl, but the last Marlow Park pair eked out runs and overs. They still needed 50 odd to win so there was no sense of panic when Wahi, who had kept superbly until that point, missed a regulation stumping. Shawl bowled a couple of full tosses that Tahore put away with glee, now runs needed in the 20s.  Panic starting to set in, however Tahore slapped the ball to Ben Ralphs, surely the end of the game….. dropped at mid-off !  oh dear. The Marlow Park players cheered from the sanctity of the club house.

Consett was thrown the ball again, last throw of the dice, but he sent down a beamer and that was top edged for 4 (and a no ball to boot).  Now 5 needed, and Tahore flicked elegantly through mid wicket past a diving Brockton for 4…… Surely Nomads could not lose this match.  1 to win, 3 balls left, Tahore pokes to Page at short-ish cover & the pair run,  Pagey calm as a cucumber underarms accurately to Wahi who removes the bails and Pillai is run out. A tie !   Tahore 46 not out. Well batted that man.

Super game of cricket watched by an enthusiastic crowd on a lovely summer's afternoon. We look forward to returning to Marlow Park next season
