Blackburn & Brockton prosper against depleted Marlow Park

N omads continued their winning ways at the pretty setting of Marlow Park CC on Sunday. The Nomads side had something of a “veteran” look to it, whereas the Marlow team, with no Kim Barlow, was full of youthful exuberance. Tom Brockton won the toss and inserted the home side on a bright and sunny July afternoon. The wicket was over to one side of the square which meant a rather short boundary towards the pavilion and a massive hit towards the church.

Robbie Blackburn and Andrew Smith were entrusted with the new ball and both bowled impressive spells, Blackburn full of hustle, bustle and raw pace and Smith “the silver fox” guile and variation. Stephens and Bradley were dismissed cheaply, LBW and courtesy of a sharp catch from ex-Kiwi pro Ross Ormiston at 2nd slip. Brockton then dismissed the dangerous Marlow skipper Munsha and the home side were in all sorts of trouble at 56-3. We then discovered that Marlow Park were two men short, alas, despite the desperate calls from their skipper to try and round up the miscreants who had not turned up despite confirming earlier in the week. Nomads generously agreed to give Marlow Park a sub fielder when It was their turn to take the field.

Stan Wooliscroft added to the Marlow park woes with yet another fine spell of devious leg-spin bowling and was rewarded with a wicket courtesy of a regulation catch from the safe hands of Charlie Peerless at mid-off. However 1st XI opening batsman Nawaz was beavering away at the other end, dispatching anything with a hint of width and he brought up a half century with a back cut off Wooliscroft. Now past 50 Nawaz cut loose, realising he was losing batsmen at the other end on a far too regular basis and dispatched Wooliscroft for 18 off his 7th over. Young Shepherds Bush leggie Saif Khan was brought into the attack and struck immediately, Nawaz hoisting him high over cover only for Blackburn to take a stunning catch at full stretch at deep extra cover. A great moment and richly deserved applause from the many onlookers pick-nicking on the edge of the boundary. Khan then had the obdurate Zimbabwean Wayne Hellyar taken at mid-on by Brockton the very next ball, another skier, this time via a top edged sweep. Khan on a hat-trick but Coote was good enough to survive despite the close attention of 5 fielders.

Marlow Park were now on the rack at 135-6 and their cause was not helped by a foolish run out (well done Charlie Peerless for his quick thinking) and then Peerless turned wicket taker himself with his off-spin to trap Fields stone dead LBW. Marlow Park bundled out for 145 in just 32 overs. A professional fielding performance from the Nomads with a number of good catches taken.

After the usual delicious tea Blackburn and Chris Wilson opened up for the Nomads and their stand was worth 36 in just 7 overs. Blackburn and Wilson finding the boundary in the early overs, but Wilson was adjudged LBW (again!) and Ross Ormiston joined Blackburn who was looking in rampant form, punishing anything short and with an iota of width. 50 & out for Blackburn as he reached his maiden Nomads half century before drilling the next delivery to Nawaz off skipper Munsha who took a super one handed catch (very nonchalant) to dismiss the tall Nomads all rounder. Jamie Dixon’s stay at the crease was to be a short one as he was unfortunate to be bowled off his back leg for just 5, also by skipper Munsha.

With Nomads 85-3 and Nawaz ripping his leg-breaks the home side sensed a sniff of victory but any thoughts of that were quickly quashed by Ormiston and skipper Brockton who knocked off the remaining 64 runs in just 11 overs. Brockton weighing in with a boundary laden half century and Ormiston a classy 26 not out featuring the shot of the day, a gorgeous on-drive for 4. Nomads reaching 149-3 in just 28 overs, a fine 7 wicket win. Nomads lingered long into the evening and Kim Barlow + father turned up to join us for a few drinks post match. Our thanks to Marlow Park for an enjoyable contest and sumptuous tea. We look forward to returning to their idyllic ground in 2015.

Plenty of cricket coming up, Northwood, Charterhouse as well as Woking & Horsall CC all playing host to Nomads this coming week. Availability as always to Michael Blumberg and the match manager.
