Veterans lose the day

It was a case of the veterans against the youngsters when Virgin CC took on Holmesdale on a gloriously sunny afternoon. Virgin, fielding five players who admitted to being over 50 (and maybe a few who didn't) seemed initially to have the upper hand over a Holmesdale team largely consisting of teenagers. The runs flowed freely, thanks mainly to a classy (my team-mates description, not mine) 61 from Jeremy Lascelles, and a powerful 101 from Andy Stokes. The middle order however failed to gi çve a lot of support, before some fine hitting from Ben Bodie and Max Keble-White down the order enabled Virgin to declare on 271-9 after only 40 overs.

After losing their opening bat in the second over, Holmesdale's South African overseas pro threatened to win the game single-handedly until a magic ball from Ben Bodie accounted for him. It was the classic off-spinners wicket - luring the batsman down the wicket to drive, only to spin the ball back sharply and bowl him through the gate. Wickets continued to fall, and Virgin scented victory when their captain was dismissed, leaving the score on 168-5. But they hadn't reckoned on an astonishing display of big-hitting (slogging?) by their 15 year old no.7, who accompanied by a more dour effort from their no. 3 (also 15 years old), put on over 100. The shot that brought up the winning runs typified Holmesdale's effort - a flat batted six over extra cover off  Stokes!

The sun shone all afternoon, nearly 550 runs were scored, and the talent ë and enthusiasm of youth flourished. It sounds like the perfect game of cricket. But we lost, so f... all that bollocks!
