Kandampully ton & Dummer 6 defeat  Gaieties in a thriller at Shipton Under Wychwood CC

Nomads travelled to the pretty setting of Shipton UnderWychood CC in the heart of the Cotswolds to play their old friends and rivalsthe Gaieties. Both sides had a smattering of youth, the days of such cricketingluminaries G.C Lamb, Ossie Gooding and Harold Pinter many moons ago.  James Schnieder of the Gaieties won the tossand elected to bat (unsurprisingly) on a hard looking track, blue skies, warmweather and a quick outfield no doubt adding to his decision to get runs on the board.

The other Schnieder, Tim, opened the batting for theGaieties with the in form Bob Crowe at no3. Tim has grown into a very talented batsman and he anchored the inningssuperbly, the rest of the Gaieties batting round the young cricketer as heregistered a well deserved hundred. He did give two chances, a sprawling Pagecould not hold onto a caught and bowled when Schneider was on 78 and skipperBrockton nearly pulled off a spectacular one handed effort at wide mid wicketwhen just past his hundred. For the remainder of the time his innings was quite simply poetry in motion.

Others (inc his brother) supported Schieder but Nomads stuckto their task, Page claiming 4 wickets late in the piece, Shawl a long spell of15+ overs and Smart / Mishra both bowling accurately. Jon Gibson, despite a tweaked hamstring hungonto a swirler at long off to, in part, force the declaration. Gaieties well placed with262 on the board from 49 overs.  Therewere comments from some quarters of the Nomads that the Gaieites had batted on a little too long, howeverit looked likely the Nomads would get in the region of 43 or 44 overs to chasethis seemingly daunting total, requiring 6 an over from the outset.

A good start was needed, Brockton and Kandampully providedthat with a century stand in 21 overs.  Bothplayers looking in good touch, until Brockton was dismissed for 52, butOrmiston kept up the pace with a near run a ball 50 full of deft strokes.  Kandampully “schlapped” very effectively, pitched up balls disappeared though and over mid on and mid-wicket with great force fromhis broad blade. The pair also ran very smartly between the wickets taking onthe arms of the lesser lights in the deep. Nomads needed 132 from the final 20 overs, with 9 wickets in handcertainly favorites.

Ormiston perished with 14 overs left in the adventure formore quick runs and the mighty Sajjad Shawl was promoted up to no4 to give theinnings some added impetus. He did strike a trademark massive 6 but perished for14 attempting a similar stroke to the longest part of the ground. Dummer joinedKandampully who clipped a nifty two off his legs to bring up a very wellcrafted century. He was then bowled through the gate the very next ball and all of a sudden justunder 8 an over was needed from the final 7 overs.

Jon Gibson came and went in the blink of an eye, bowled byTim Schnieder but Dummer “the finisher” as he is now known at Sherfield onLoddon CC, used all of his experience to keep the strike and pick the gaps. The gamewas very much in the balance, Saurabh Wahi joined Dummer but two lusty blows to the boundary off successive balls past the statuesque Blumberg look-a-like Mike Kirkwood brought the game backinto Nomads grasp.  13 needed off thefinal 2 overs. Dummer got that down to 6 off 7 balls then supplied the coup degrasse by smashing a massive six over the pavilion in the direction of the LambTavern pub to win the game with just 1 over remaining.

Spirits were certainly high after the game and the playerswere quick to congratulate the Gaieties for what had been a superbly foughtcontest.  Kandampully the hero and wellsupported with the bat by Ormiston and Brockton, and latterly Dummer for hiscreative cameo.

The Nomads will face theGaieties again later on in the season at Ascott House in the Pinter, Gooding& Lamb fixture. We can only hope for a game of similar caliber.  Our thanks to Shipton Under Wychwood CC forthe use of their pretty ground and a delicious tea.
