               Nomads underperform in the Gloom

curious match whose start was delayed as Tadworth had forgotten to leave the Pavilion keys in a covenient place..  As a result the 20 overs began mighty late and the latter part of the match was played in deepest gloom.

Gaieties won the toss and elected to bat which was unfortunate for Nomads as Jemile Darraji was still some distance away.Tom Reader opened the bowling and induced Ben Nealon to play on first ball. This early success was not followed for some time despite some tight bowling, in particuler, from Blumberg. Elliot and Henwood put on 105 runs  before Eliott was caught by Ed Scarr off Darraji for 50.Greenaway went quickly to Andy Smith and Henwood fell after completing an excellent 87 caught by Jeremy Lascelles also off Smith. At 153-4 off some 40 overs Gaieties were along way from a decent declaration total.

Jonathan Smith and Thurston batted on to good effect against some wayward bowling from Surridge and Tom Lascelles reaching 233 after 52 overs.

The Gaieties innings was played in sunshine but by the time an excellent tea was consumed the weather has deteriorated to a cold gloomy evening though the scorers' veins were warmed by a supply of red wine from Gaieties chairman Harold Pinter. Matthew Burton opened with a maiden against Jeremy Lascelles but was soon to have his bowling savaged by 'Doc' Phil Bell who hit 48 off three  overs and 12 off Henwood's first. Nomads at 88-0 off a mere 11 overs were well en route to their target of 233 off 41 overs. Then Bell (70 runs from 38 balls),Lascelles and Surridge fell for no runs and the match was dramatically turned round.

Darraji and Lane rebuilt the innings but at 121 Ed Hughes caught Darraji for 20( He had scored 151* at Stowe only the Monday before). Smith joined Lane and these two added another 20 before Lane was brilliantly stumped by Hughes who two runs later accounted for Smith  as well. Nomads had slumped to  a precarious 143-6 with some 15 overs to go. A run out and two more Ed Hughes dismissals rendered Nomads 167-9 with  7 overs to go. This situation despite the poor light would normally have resulted in some contest as Gaieties tried to dislodge the obdurate Blumberg but the inexperienced Tom Lascelles proved easy meat for Thurston's guilful left arm slows and so Gaieties won by the handsome margin of 64 runs, a result much appreciated by Chairman Harold Pinter.

A convivial post match session was enjoyed as Nomads analysed their serious under-performance. Well, at least Match Manager and Virgin XI founder, Jeremy Lascelles kept shaking his head in disbelief and was not consoled by the Nomads' Hon Sec's suggestion that next time he select a 'keeper as good as Ed Hughes!

Of the Gaieties team six had played for Nomads.
